ABSOLUTE ‘Man in the Grey Flannel Suit’! Iconic suit style in THE colour. Traditional vintage charcoal grey wool flannel American made Ivy League suit retailed by Kauffman’s of California in superb clean condition. Union labels suggest pre 1960’s manufacture – a real Ivy head might even be able to deduce the identity of the manufacturer from the label codes but that level of arcane knowledge is beyond me. This is a great quality suit which looks like it has had some degree of hand finishing. ALL the essential details are here: soft, natural shoulders with virtually no padding. Raised 'lapped' seams throughout. Undarted ‘sack’ silhouette. 3/2 button front with rolled over narrow lapel. Single hooked vent to rear. Two flapped side pockets and one slit, breast pocket. Two buttons to each cuff. Traditional American 'butterfly' lining which keeps the jacket soft, light and draping beautifully. Absolutely no wear to collar collar fold, cuffs, button holes etc. True colour of fabric is a dark, charcoal grey - the photos make it look it lighter.
Trousers are flat fronted with a full cut slightly tapered down to 1 1/2” turned up cuffs. They have a traditional Ivy style high ‘rise’ from crotch to waistband. Skinny belt loops. Two 'on seam' side pockets and two at rear. Original Talon zipper. Clean inner waistband and pocket lining.
I bought this suit a few years back from one of the main American online vintage retailers but truth be told it never really was my size so has been hung in a suit bag in my wardrobe ever since. It’s a real shame as it’s a bit of a beauty and needs to be worn - and it was quite expensive at the time! Only faults with are very minor indeed – two tiny (2mm”) moth holes near front hem seam of jacket (see photo) - an easy repair for a decent tailor and an absolutely tiny pin-prick hole near to breast pocket. They are truly near invisible but are accentuated by the camera flash. And one professionally already 'invisible mended' moth hole near rear left shoulder near sleeve seam. Very hard to spot unless viewed very close. And I don't need to mention the the BB shirt and repp tie aren't included, do I? No size tag so suit measures up as:
Chest (pit to pit 45")
Sleeve 25 1/4"
Shoulders (seam to seam at widest) 18 1/2"
Length (collar to hem) 32"
Waist 35 1/2" (with approx. 2" to let out)
Inside leg 29"(possible additional 4” if you dispense with cuffs)
Outside leg 41" (waistband to cuff)
Width at thigh 27"
Width at cuff 17 1/2"
