Vintage Paperbacks

William Golding

Fiction Type:

Pincher Martin

Printing Year:

Vintage Penguin paperback book of Pincher Martin by William Golding, author of the classic Lord of the Flies. It has the iconic orange Penguin cover.

The text on the back reads:

Just as in Lord of the Flies William Golding worked out the deepest and most primitive human instincts in the behavior of a party of boys abandoned on a coral island, so in Pincher Martin he makes the plight of a castaway sailor serve as an epitome of humanity on this planet. Martin is Prometheus, chained to a rock. With exact symbolism and terrifying precision we are shown every level of the consciousness of intelligent man, as he pits his wits against thirst, hunger, cold, insanity, and death. Whether his hopeless refuge is seen as a remote Atlantic rock or the lonely hallucination of a drowning man, the mind of Pincher Martin emerges with the elemental outlines of a statue by Epstein or Henry Moore.
This book was selected by both Arthur Koestler in the Sunday Times and Kenneth Tynan in the Observer as the Novel of the Year.

First published in 1960, this edition was published in 1962.

The book is in good vintage condition. There is some wear to the cover (including some browning) and some minor wear to the pages.
