Most children love dolls. The doll is an important toy in a child’s life. The child will play and play with their doll, changing its clothes, cuddling it, being a Mother to the doll, taking it wherever they go.
Below is a piece taken from "The relationship to the doll" by Bernadette Raichle who wrote the book "Creating a Home for Body, Soul and Spirit - a New Approach to Childcare". I just loved the way she has explained the relationship between the child and the doll and thought I would share it with you.
"No house built would be complete without one or two (sometimes more) “babies” to care for. Often a high chair will be brought to the morning table – complete with a bib and drinking cup – not for [the child] but for a dolly!. The child does not distinguish between what is play and what is real, because they are one and the same. The child totally, and with his whole being embraces the dolly and cares for it, his soul experiencing the image of the human being. With this conscious, yet profound experience, the child’s journey into life and further development is strengthened and deepened. Above all the doll provides the child with the possibility of being supported in his need to become, to enter the world of relationship that begins with mother and father, brother and sister. The doll has the potential to become the child’s first special friend because hidden from the unseeing eye of the adult are archetypal mysteries, so tangible to the child and his dreaming world of heaven and earth.”





   
  ABOUT THE WALDORF DOLL  

A Waldorf doll (also called Steiner doll) is a form of doll used in Waldorf education. Made of wool and cotton, using techniques drawing on traditional European dollmaking, its appearance is intentionally simple in order to allow the child playing with it to improve or strengthen imagination and creativity. For instance, it has no facial expression. Its legs and arms are flexible, allowing natural postures. (information taken from Making Waldorf Dolls book also available in my store).

Technique:[citation needed] Traditional Waldorf dolls are made from cotton interlock knit fabric and wool stuffing. They are often entirely natural. Typically the trademark long hair of a Waldorf doll is made of mohair or boucle. Some doll makers use alternative hair material such as: Wool, Rayon, and Cotton. However, by buying these dolls you are supporting a fantastic FAIR TRADE project (THE Q’EWAR PROJECT) for under privileged women in Peru. It is a social and economic initiative working with the indigenous women living in a Quechua speaking village community in southern Peru. It takes 5 days for each doll to be completed!! The women love to work outdoors where possible.
