|Service:||Army||Conflict:||World War I (1914-1918)|
This is a WW1 grenade from Deville wood which was a battle that formed part of the Somme campaign.
One can only speculate as to the fate of the person that would have been on possession of the grenade at the time! It appears to have not been detonated!!
The wooden base is in fair condition as seen in pictures.
It was initially purchased from the Whitehall theatre of war/London war museum at one of the auctions held upon its closure.
I obtained this from a house clearance of the owner.
I have obtained a collection of items and have been given some great help researching the museum and some of the items in question by the the archivist of the national Maritine museum, who purchased an item from this collection. Another piece was also featured in the Daily express newspaper.
I have incIuded the relevant paperwork relating to this item.
I have been informed that the items was on display between 1983-1985.
