Conflict: World War I (1914-1918)

This is a Matching Pair of brass engraved 13lbr shell cases dated 1916.

The cases are rarer than many others as they were used in the 13lbr field gun at the start of WW1 which was towed by horses and used mainly by the cavalry.

As the war progressed and settled into trench warfare, heavier guns such as the 18lbr and Howitzer were used which were heavier, more powerful but were more suited to static positions, and had allocted gun crews.

The cases have been formed by tapping a planishing pattern into them leaving a very ornate laurel leaf design surrounding a shield. The shields have been engraved 1914 and 1918.

The bases are clearly marked, the first with 13Pr and the date 22.5.16 and the second with BSC for the Bethlehem Steel Corporation in America and dated 10/16. for october 1916.

The cases stand 28cm tall and 9cm in diameter. They weigh 2.2kg in weight . The first case has a small split to the top rim (see 2nd photo) this has been repaired and is hardly noticeable. The tops are nice and circular as can be seen from picture 10.  The overall condition is very good with no other splits or cracks and they are in great shape for items 98 years old.

Nice collectors items       Thanks for considering.
