WWII German Der Speiss Pioneer Battlion, 5 Photo Albums

A fine, historically important, collection of German photographic records relating to the Service of a Pioneer Hauptwachtmeister (Regimental Staff Sergeant) in the 2nd Company of the 17th Pioneer Battalion (Bridging Engineers), part of the 17th Infantry Division.

The role of the Hauptwachtmeister (nicknamed 'der Speiss' because traditionally they carried a spike) was to keep a record of the daily activities of the Battalion. The albums detail life in the army before the war; the Invasion of Poland; the Invasion of Luxemburg, Belgium and France, then Poland and Russia.

The photos show troops, bridging equipment, tanks and armoured and self propelled guns, planes, wreckage, POW's, dead enemy troops and German burials. There are also photos of commanding officers the presentation of the Regimental Banner, parades, visits by Generals, SS Officers and Adolf Hitler.

The 17th Infantry was infamous for War Crimes committed during the Second World War. Most reported were those carried out during the invasion of Poland, when the Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler (Hitler's Personal Bodyguard and later the 1st SS Panzer Division) were attached to it. There were many instances of massing civilians for no apparent reason. The War Crimes Commission investigated and established that the first War Crime was committed on the 3/9/39, but West German Prosecutors refused to act against those responsible as there was insufficient evidence to apportion individual blame.

The five photograph albums have around 620 photos of which around20 are non military related. They only cover up to about 1843, so it is possible the owner did not survive the war.
