The tablet is a pointing device, and works like the mouse. It comes with an electronic pen that operates on top of the tablet. With this tablet you can create illustrations, web graphics and banners in addition to editing digital photos, create animations and even use all the office applications. The tablet can actually replace the mouse.
Graphic tablets are a popular option for digital image editing and other graphics where a mouse does not give you the degree of control that you would like or need.
So what is the difference between a tablet and the mouse?
Wacom tablets are cordless, ball-free and battery-free, so no worries of cleaning your pen, and no frustration of that unwanted cord! Also, while a mouse operates using relative coordinate, a tablet operates using absolute coordinates, making PV operation more intuitive. For example, with absolute coordinates, when you place your pen on the bottom let corner of the tablet surface, the cursor on the screen will move to the bottom let corner of the computer screen. No matter where the cursor is on the screen, once the pen is moved to the bottom let corner of the tablet, the cursor on the screen will move directly to the same place.
Wacom Products can be used with an ordinary mouse at any time.
What can I do with a Tablet?
Besides being a replacement for a mouse, tablets can be used in various applications. Here are a few examples:
. Photo editing: With the tablet, it is much easier to edit and correct digital/scanned photos.
. Freehand drawing on the computer. With a mouse, this is a very crude affair, but the tablet makes it a breeze.
. CAD and 3D modelling.
. Handwriting recognition.
All of the above is done easily with the tablet whereas with the mouse it can be time consuming, frustration or near impossible!
What is “Pen Pressure?
This feature of the WACOM pens and erasers senses the amount of pressure being applied. This is used to create natural looking pen, brush and eraser strokes in applications that support pressure sensitivity. Even more, with 512 pressure levels in a Graphire and 1,024 pressure levels in an Intuos, you can precisely control opacity, colour, exposure, or line width while creating smooth curves and gradual transitions. Different applications take advantage of pressure sensitivity in many ways, depending on the application’s capabilities.
What are “Application-specific settings”?
WACOM tools and tablets can have their settings specifically customized for individual applications, the control panel enabling you to program them to behave differently in different applications. Your application-specific settings are in effect whenever you use the application, because the driver detects the active application automatically. Also see “Tool buttons”. (this feature is not available for Graphire3).
What’s the difference between an LCD Tablet and a Touch Screen?
Performing touch-screen type operations on an LCD tablet is done by using a pen, instead of touching the screen with your finger. Compared to a Touch Screen, it is much easier to use a detailed user interface with a pen and LCD tablet. Even if the buttons are small and the user interface is complicated, with a pen you will not need to worry about pressing two adjacent buttons at the same time, or pressing another button with your palm by accident. Also, LCD tablets last longer because the sensors are placed beneath a protective screen, and above all, they are much brighter and easier to look at.
The Intuos pen tablet is designed for both professional and serious home users and allows you to maximize productivity, comfort, usability and control for every task.
2048 pressure levels
The 2048 levels of pressure sensitivity (compared to 1024 in older Intuos models) and the new Wacom Tip Sensor together provide unsurpassed pen control and sensitivity. Now with 2048 levels of pressure-sensitivity on the pen tip and eraser, the Intuos4 allows you to even more finely control software tools like exposure, brush width, eraser size, and opacity by changing how hard you press the pen to the tablet surface.
Minimum activation pressure less than 1g.
Compared to older models having 10g of activation pressure, the Intuos4's 1g of activation pressure means that the tablet can sense the pen with the smallest of pressures, making your work more precise.
The new Precision Mode function enabled through an ExpressKey provides you with improved pixel-level control by 'zooming in' to the area worked on so that you can work precisely on areas that require it.
The software recognizes which Intuos4 tool (e.g. pen) is being used and the settings for that tool - every input device has its unique ID and every user can customize his own Intuos4 tools and the Intuos4 tablet always knows which tool is used. (Feature is dependent on software package supporting this feature - professional packages like Abobe Photoshop and Corel Painter do so. Check your software documentation for details if in doubt.)
All Intuos4 tablets and pens recognize tilt angles of up to 60° - important for realistic paintbrush simulation and the creative use of controllable tool tip width.
The display toggle offers increased flexibility in multiple monitor environments and allows you to easily switch between screens
New design - for use by right and left-handers
The new, thin, ergonomic design can be used by both left and right handed users. Simply turn the tablet which way you prefer and specify the setting in the tablet driver on your computer. This also eliminates the risk of activating the ExpressKeys accidentally with the hand holding the pen.
Optimized surface texture
The Intuos4 surface texture enables smooth, consistent strokes even over long periods of time.
Optimized Grip Pen
The Intuos4 has a cushioned, ergonomic pen with the look and feel of an elegant writing tool for maximum comfort and control and is specially designed for balance when holding and ease of eraser use. Also features a colour-coded identity ring to allow you to see immediately which pen is which if you are using more than one. Comes packaged with four different types of nib.
The pen stand also acts as a holder for pen nibs and a nib extractor. This is a simple, convenient, functional, and attractive storage location - no more searching for your spare nibs!
ExpressKeys and TouchRing
The tablet has eight programmable ExpressKeys. There is also a TouchRing that can be programmed with four functions; you can toggle between these four functions with the button in the middle of the Touch-Ring. The use of the ExpressKeys and TouchRing makes functions like scrolling, zooming, brush size, canvas rotation, and layer selection easy to access. Each ExpressKey has an OLED icon next to it that shows you which function it performs, and the TouchRing has four LED indicators to show which function is currently toggled on. Note that the OLED icons appear correctly orientated no matter which way up (left or right-handed) you use the tablet. Also, by clicking one of the ExpressKeys, you can see at a glance onscreen a more detailed listing of how you have customized the keys and ring.
A fast, easy-to-use customizable menu capability to effectively manage custom functions. Just hit the radial menu ExpressKey and you see onscreen a radial menu, a circle divided into eight slices. Each slice represents a customizable function - you can even nest menus by allocating a submenu to one or more slices.
The USB cable is detachable and can be attached at either the top or the bottom of the tablet side, allowing flexible mobility and configuration.
