A watercolour by the artist Eric Erskine Tufnell (1888-1978). The watercolour depicts HMS Kent in WWI dazzle paint. The piece is signed and dated on the bottom right corner.

~ Commander Eric Erskine Campbell Tufnell (1888-1978) ~

In 1904 he went to sea as a midshipman serving on submarines 1909 -1917 and anti-submarine work until 1919. He commanded several small ships in the eastern Mediterranean and served in the Fleet Air Arm 1926-1930. In 1938 he was recalled to the navy to carry out meteorological work in Colombo. His studio was above the old Gieves & Hawkes building on The Hard, Portsmouth.

~ HMS Kent ~

HMS Kent was a Monmouth-class armoured cruiser of 9,800 tons displacement, of the British Royal Navy. She was launched on 6 March 1901, with her heaviest guns being 6 inch quick-firers. She served on the China Station between 1906 and 1913. On the outbreak of the First World War she was re-commissioned and sent to the Falkland Islands where under the command of Arthur Bedford she participated in the Battle of the Falkland Islands and sank SMS Nürnberg. During the action her flags were damaged - new ones were presented to her on 8 December 1915 by the County Society of Kent. She was sold for scrap and broken up in June 1920. 

~ Dimensions ~

The frame has a width of 22.2 inches (56.25cm), a height of 16.5 inches (42cm) and a depth of 0.7 inch (2cm).
The watercolour has a width of 16 inches (40.75cm) and a height of 10.5 inches (26.75cm).

~ Condition ~

The painting is in excellent condition with no foxing.
