These two letters were handwritten replies to a Tony Moffit, now an artist, not author. They contain heartfelt advice and personal insight into Wilbur's own writing early days. When I showed them to Wilbur he comments, "when did I have time to handwritten a reply?".  As any collector know hand-written letters are extremely rare and much more valuable. Buy them while they are still affordable.

Just received-

Dear dogfark,

My name is Tony Moffitt THE Tony Moffitt who received the handwritten letters from Wilbur Smith way back in 1981 and 1984. At the time I was a teenager and wanted desperately to be a full-time author.

Your description is correct - I spent 5 years as a full-time professional artist. BUT I am now a bestselling Amazon author. My ebooks have sold a couple of hundred thousand copies in the last 18 months (in

several genres). I sold those letters to a guy in Queensland when I was painting full time. I'd given up on my dream to write for a living… until one day something magical called the e-book happened, and

since then I have never looked back.

Receiving these two handwritten letters from Wilbur Smith literally changed my life. Since I was 13 years old and my father handed me a copy of 'When The Lion Feeds' I wanted to be an author. My first job was in a bookshop at 17, which is when I wrote to Wilbur the first time. A few years later I actually owned a newspaper. I was the journalist and editor, and I interviewed Wilbur by telephone when he was in Melbourne promoting Golden Fox. I think that was around 1990 or 1991. We talked for 45 minutes, and again, Wilbur's influence and his words had a profound effect.

But the realities of life intervened, and I became a full-time professional artist. I had a lot of success, but never gave up the dream of writing for a living.

In 2012 I published my first novel on Amazon as an e-book - and I have never looked back since. I have gone on to publish several e-books since that initial novel, using a couple of pen names. I've had three Amazon bestsellers in three different genres, and am currently living my dream as a full-time author. I am negotiating the sale of my latest book to an American audio book company, and also a US publisher. I've also had interest and phone calls from a New York literary agent and another agent based in the UK.

None of this would have happened if it wasn't for Wilbur's letters, and his willingness to take the time to encourage a teenage kid who had big dreams and stars in his eyes. It's taken me 30 years to fulfil the dream.... but it has been worth it! I can still recite Wilbur's first letter word for word (and I often do when I'm struggling for inspiration or motivation).

Tony

Important- Shipping Times this Xmas

We do not share the Royal mail’s exuberance on shipping packages. Namely it’s the risk of them getting lost, not simply delayed over Christmas and New Year time.  Items ordered for UK shipping this week, 9th-15th December, should arrive on time under the free option. Order now! Overseas customers should opt for the Fast Service at extra cost to be sure it arrives in time for Xmas if it’s a gift. Next week 16th-22nd, UK orders should select the Fast service option if you want it in time, although we can’t guaranty it if ordered later in the week.  All orders received after December 20th will not ship until January 6th, again to reduce the risk of them getting lost in the mail. Most of our items are rare. You should still order them as soon as possible before they sell elsewhere.  Thank you for your understanding.
