The Author

author picture

Nigel Williams was born in Cheshire in 1948. He has written a volume of short stories and novels.

His plays for the theatre have been translated into over twenty languages. His television plays have won him two Bafta awards and an Emmy (Dirty Tricks), while his novels have earned him a Somerset Maugham Award and a place on the Whitbread Prize shortlist. Many of his books have been adapted for television, and his radio broadcasts include readings from his travel books, From Wimbledon to Waco and Two and a Half Men in a Boat. This year, ITV will screen his original play based on the marriage of the Queen Mother to George VI, Bertie and Elizabeth. He has been described by the poet Douglas Dunn as ‘the funniest writer we have – ha ha and peculiar’ and by the Times as ‘the best English comic novelist’. He is married and lives at the top of Putney Hill, just out of reach of Wimbledon, where many of his novels and stories are set.

The Novel

This comic trilogy brings together in one volume the tales of Henry Farr (hero of "The Wimbledon Poisoner"), Simon Britton (the 14-year-old Ufologist of "They Came from SW19"), and Robert Wilson (the aimless, untruthful young Englishman of "East of Wimbledon").

Wimbledon Poisoner
Henry Farr is forty years old. He lives in Wimbledon with his wife and daughter. He works for a firm of city solicitors. He is suburban, average, conventional - and desperate to get rid of his wife.
But when Farr's plans for the perfect murder go disastrously wrong, his life starts to spiral out of control and he plunges deeper and deeper into an abyss of chaos and confusion. Meanwhile, Detective Inspector Rush, a more than usually dedicated member of the Wimbledon Police Force, seems to be on to him.

They Came from SW19
14-year-old ufologist Simon Britton's father has just died and his mother, a member of the First Church of Christ the Spiritualist, is trying to get in touch with him. But some weird messages come through instead. By the author of &'My Life Closed Twice' which won the Somerset Maugham Award.

East of Wimbledon
Robert Wilson is aimless and feckless, and has passed himself off as a Muslim in order to get a job at the Wimbledon Independent Islamic Boys Day School. His decline and fall is as inevitable as it is hilarious, as everything Islamic baffles him.

Reviews

Wimbledon Poisoner

The best comic novelist in this country.- The Times

Henry Farr sets out to murder his wife in London's greenest suburb but things go very wrong. Williams creates a farce of some stature out of this unlikely premise. (Kirkus UK)

They Came from SW19

A brilliantly witty writer --Sunday Times

The funniest comedy writer around --City limits

The best comic novelist in the country --Times
