This fantastic little book is the beginning of a 5+ book series. It begins with a young boy who has some untrained magic skills and a lot of arrogance. Eventually his arrogance leads him to an action for which he will spend the rest of his life atoning. As an assessment of human foibles it’s wonderful, as a warning about masculinity it’s hugely insightful, and as a whole series in which gendered behaviour is a key subtext, it’s outstanding. Perfect for both boys, girls and adults of all ages; Ursula le Guin made her name with this series, and every single book is amazing and completely original.
