An original Woodley's Leach's Potters Wheel
Solid wood with lead trim to flywheel and copper lined tray.
For the uninitiated, the potter sits on the wooden seat and operates
the lever, situated above the flywheel, with his foot. This causes the
flywheel and the turntable within the tray to turn.
As no electricity is used, this wheel can be used in a cellar or
outbuilding without the noise and cost of operating modern versions.
It is, however, very heavy and requires 2-3 persons to lift it safely.
For this reason, I must ask the buyer to arrange collection.
Measures: Height 99cm, Width 124 x 124 x 87 cm.
The wheel was rescued during the renovation of an old arts
college in Preston, Lancs. It is in full working order and operates very
smoothly despite its age. The photos show it as it was found with
clay, dust and general age marks.
The Leach's Potters Wheel was designed by the sons of the famed English
potter Bernard Leach. Bernard's grandson, Simon Leach, continues the
family business in Cornwall and still uses and promotes the traditional Leach's treadle wheel.
Woodley's, the manufacturers, commenced production of the Leech's wheel in Devon in 1950.
