Centre Finder For Woodturning
Clear - high impact plastic construction
Locate centres of spindles prior to lathe mounting
Perfect for lathework and other craft uses
This is must have tool for every woodturner, it's a simple, quick and effective tool to find and mark the centre point of round, hexagon or square stock up to approx 8" in diameter (hexagon up to 5 3/4" ) As a woodturner myself, I use this centre finder for marking the centre point to locate my live centre or screw chuck. I also find this tool useful for marking out a bowl blank, (I drill the central point using a forstner bit to fit my chuck jaws) and also use it to mark where to screw on a face plate. In terms of waste wood when roughing out, this makes the centre finder a cost effective tool, and more importantly makes the wood safer to turn as the wood will be more centrally balanced.
To use: Place the center finder over the end of the wood, mark a line, then rotate the center finder approximately 90° and then mark a second line. The intersection of crosshairs of the two lines will define the centre of the work piece.

Buffing Wax Bars
We have a wide choice of Buffing Bars and Buffing Wheels listed in our Ebay Shop
Grey, Brown, Green, White, Yellow, Red (Rouge), Blue (smurf poo)
Our range of buffing bars are made in the UK and widely recognised as the best buffing bars in the World.
Our Buffing bars are polishing compounds ( also called Buffing soap ) and this range covers the full range of polishing applications; from high metal removal to mirror finish polishing on a wide range of material. Each Buffing bar is formulated from selected abrasives which include calcined and fused aluminas, hematite, oxides, tripolis, emery, pumice, chalks and many more, (all these abrasives also come in different particle size and degrees of hardness ) the tupe and size of abrasive is then combined with a blend of fats, waxes and oils to aid application and act as the binding agent (generally referred to as grease). There is an almost infinate number of formulas that make Buffing bar suitable for a variety of metals, hard plastics, wood, resins and glass in either a one stage operation for general scratch removal while adding a reasonable shine, or a two to three stage process for high stock removal through to a mirror shine. The properties of these compounds can be further enhanced by combining with different types of buffing wheels. Using a highly abrasive compound with a sisal wheel will increase the cutting ability of the compound used while a soft loose leaf wheel enhances shine.
Our Buffing bars are grade with a number from 1 to 10 according to their abrasiveness and the level of shine. The first number relates to how abrasive (rough) the compound is, this is called " The Cut " the higher the number the more stock (material) will be cut / removed. The second number is " The Gloss " or sheen and this relates to how much shine the compound will give, the higher this number the higher the gloss shine will be.
10/1 = Most stock removal / least shine - semi bright or lined finish
1/10 = Least stock removal / most shine - fully bright or mirror finish
1st stage polishing (also called Burnishing) means just that its for the first stage of polishing to remove tooling marks, grinding marks, scratches or rust etc. The Final stage polishing then polishes the item to a higher sheen. Many profesional polishers do 2, 3 or even 4 stages of polishing, at each stage a finer grade of buffing bar is used, or in some case they prefer to use the same grade buffing wax, but use it with a different pattern of buffing wheel. For information the polishing stages are often called: Stage 1 = Burnishing. Stage 2 = Pre-polishing. Stage 3 = Polishing. 4) Finishing (or super finishing).
1st Stage Polishing ( cleaning and removing of grinding, tooling marks and rust etc)
Grey ( Ferrous metals like Iron & Steel )
Brown ( Non Ferrous metals like Brass, Copper and Aluminium )
Final stage polishing( Polishes material to a mirror bright, high gloss finish)
Green ( Stainless Steel )
White ( Aluminium & Chrome )
Yellow ( Resins & Plastics )
Red ( Jeweller Rouge) ( Gold & Silver )
Blue ( Copper, Brass & Bronze ) Aka Smerf Poo
We have written below information as a guide about each type of buffing bar. A question we are often asked is about the colours, as this causes confusion, possibly because the term " Colour " in the polishing trade, means to cut back the material to its original colour. The colour of Buffing bars mean nothing whatsover, its only a dye colour and its basicaly only to makes it easy to identify each type of buffing bar. We have made our buffing bars in colours that are traditionaly associated with specific polishing tasks.
For 1st stagecleaning, polishing and mark removal for Ferrous metals ( Iron, Steel and Stainless Steel ) rating 8 / 4
Grey buffing wax is made from Alumina Grey coarse grade abrasive particles that makes it ideal for greater stock removal ( removal of casting and grinding marks etc). With a very high cutting rate this compound is ideal for use on Steel, Stainless Steel, Titanium, Tool Steel and other ferrous metals and is not suitable for
for soft metals like Gold, Silver, Pewter, Nickel or Platinum. Best used with a Sisal buffing wheel for maximum stock removal, it can also be used with a Stitched cotton buffing wheel when a less abrasive cutting action is needed. The high abrasive rating guide is 8 and that makes Grey the ideal choice to remove tooling / grinding marks, imperfections and rust from metal and is usually followed by a final polish with either Green or White buffing bar to achieve a bright mirror finish.
Brown (tripoli compound)

Brown has a relatively high cut and high shine rating of 7/7.
For Final Stage polishing of Very Hard Metals - ( like Stainless Steel and Tool Steel ): rating 7 / 8

Also used for light polishing of lacquer resins. The 4/7 rating gives this buffing bar gives it good cutting abilities combined with a good shine level.
Red ( Jewellers Rouge)
for Final Stage polishing ofGold & Silver: rating 1 / 9
Red also called Jewellers Rouge ( Rouge is simply the French word for Red ) is used by Jewellers for polishing Gold, Silver, Pewter, Nickel, Platinum, Glass and Soft metals. Rouge enhances the colour of gold.Red is recommended for use with a Loose leaf buffing wheel (or any type of soft buffing wheel). Red is also used the optics industry to polish Glass. Red has a very slow, ultra fine cutting action and gives a mirror like finish. Rouge has the very lowest cut rating of 1, so you need to get the metal to a good standard before using rouge in order to achieve a mirror finish.
Blue ( aka Smerf Poo )
For Final Stage polishing ofCopper, Brass and Bronze.rating 5 / 8
Blue was primarily developed for final stage polishing of Copper, Brass and Bronze, also commonly used on Stainless Steel, Aluminium, Chrome, Nickel plate and Zinc, .

Blue has become more widely known on youtube as " Smurf Poo " (that is such a great name, only wish we had thought of it).
All our buffing compounds are made in the UK and offer excellent value for money. While larger bars, manufactured in India or China, are available their quality can vary from a dry crumbly compound, which falls apart, to one which is over greasy. For the average home workshop these bars will last a number of years when protected from dust and drying out - store in a sealed container or wrap in plastic.
