 13mm Capacity

Heavy - Duty Chuck

Morse  Taper  1

A good quality, general purpose Heavy Duty Chuck suitable for Engineering and Woodturning Lathes. The jaws will grip up to 13mm and close down to almost nothing to grip very small drill bits.

Supplied complete with a Chuck Key and Standard Morse Taper 1 Arbor

These chucks are all brand new and boxed and originaly sold for £27.00 plus Vat

We have sold 1000s of these excellent chucks.

I have used one of these chucks myself for many years on both my Harrison and Axminster lathes and found them to be well made, solid and reliable.

I have written below some information on chucks and Morse tapers that may be of interest.
One of the things that confuse many people is the Morse taper, how it works or simply what size Morse taper they need for their own lathe.
I have written below a few brief notes to try and help, but If have any questions then please ask.

What is a Morse taper?

Some people are unsure what size Morse taper fitting they need for their lathe or even what is a Morse taper. The Morse Taper is the "hollow tapered hole" in the centre of the Headstock and in the Tailstock of Lathes (as well as some Pillar drills and Milling machines) morse tapers are made to common diameter sizes with a universally recognised standard tapered profile. A Morse taper fitting is standard on just about every lathe made in the world since the 1950s.

Morse Tapers come in eight sizes. The taper size is normally identified by a single digit ranging from 0 to 7  (0 being the smallest) the words Morse Taper are commonly abbreviated to the letters MT, or MK in Europe (Morse Kone),  a MT1 or a MK1 is a Morse Taper Number 1.  MT2 or a MK2 being a Morse Taper Number 2.

It is fairly easy to identify which MT size you need as there is quite big difference in the hole diameter. Simply measuring the hole diameter in your tail stock. The approx Morse Taper hole sizes is written below, but if you are not sure then please send me a message.

MT1 = 12mm    MT2 = 18mm   MT3 = 24mm  (MT1 & MT2 being the most popular).

Whilst there are other tapers, these are very rarely found on lathes.  Of these "other tapers" the most common is a Jacobs taper which is normally only found on Pillar drills. The fitting (the hole) in the back of the chuck is called the "short taper" and these vary enormously. O ur chucks have the common (and most popular) fitting called B16. The B16 is the Metric DIN taper number. The dimensions of the B16 "short taper" are 15.73mm taper to 14.50mm with a taper length of 24mm.

How does a Morse Taper work? Lathes, by their nature, operate in a rotary manner and normally a rotating workpiece comes into contact with a fixed tool, i.e. a drill bit held in a drill chuck held in the tailstock. The chuck must be held firmly in place, properly centred in line with the axis of rotation, but also able to be quickly and simply removed. The best way of achieving this was found to be using a tapered metal bar (similar to a ice cream cone with the top cut off) fitted into a hollowed tapered hole (or sleeve) in the head or tail stock. The large tapered surface area of the cone holds the shaft very securely in place through friction; hence the invention of the Morse Taper was born (invented 1864 by A. Morse). The Morse Taper is now  universally accepted as the standard Machine Taper used throughout the world.

We also have these Chucks available in MT2 and listed in the tools section of our Ebay Shop, If you are not sure what size just let us know and we can help.

The best ideas are often the most simple! this tool is one of those brilliant ideas and easy to use ! After using one you will wonder how on earth you ever managed before!

Placing the centre finder in a drill chuck (or a machine spindle collet) and align legs of the centre finder perpendicular to the work piece, which is held firmly in a vice. Halved Solid Centre / Dead Centre

Size: Morse Taper 1 & 2    (MK1 & MK2)

  • Supplied in a handy storage tube that hangs up

We are Planet Rotur Authorised UK stockists, we sell their products simply because they make the best woodturning products in the world.

A halved solid centre is commonly used on metal turning lathes and is preferred by some woodturners because it gives more tail stock tool clearance than a live centre and also because a solid centre is more accurate than a live centre, as all live centres have a varying degree of run out. A good tip when using a solid centre is to put some wax polish on the point because it does not turn freely like a live centre.

At Endless Green we are Woodturners ourselves and are Planet Plus / Rotur, Main UK stockists.

We have a wide range of Penmaking and Woodturning items listed in our Ebay Shop that may be of interest.

We also have the chisels all listed singly in our Ebay Shop

Black Bison Clear Wax Polish 500ml - Perfect for

Liberon Tack Cloths

Pack of 10 Cloths

10 Liberon Tack Cloths -  Ideal for Woodturning / Wood

Liberon tack cloths are excellent for removing dust from all surfaces. Although I only use these myself when woodturning - prior to applying sanding sealer, stains or finishes.  I have found that if you don’t use a tack cloth then you just trap microscopic dust particles under your final finish and spoil the overall finish on close inspection. Whilst you can use a damp cloth to remove dust, a damp cloth will raise the grain slightly, which you need to sand back down and this defeats the purpose.

These Tack Cloths each come in their own sealed plastic bag, so you only use one cloth at a time and the rest stay fresh. Each cloth is reusable time and time again, I put it back in the bag after use to stop it gathering dust and one tack cloth will last me a long time.

Liberon Woodturners Safety Cloth

Pack of 10

Large size cloths approx 12 ½" x 13 ½"

  •   Ideal for applying and buffing friction polishes and waxes on the lathe
  •   Highly absorbent
  •   Material tears when catches

Applying finishes, waxes or buffing on a lathe has always been a good way to get a great finish. However, with normal cloths, there is always the danger that some threads get caught in the chuck and trapping your fingers or hand, this could and does happen,  this can mean the loss of a finger or even worse, as a woodturner myself I know from experence how easily it can happen.

These safety cloths have the characteristics of a fine buffing cloth, but are especially made to tear very easily should it get entangled in the chuck or other moving parts, therefore reducing the risk of entrapping fingers. Use the cloth to apply dyes, waxes and other finishes or to simply buff the wood while it's still turning on the lathe. It’s just not worth the risk to use normal cotton cloths, as you only need a accident to happen once!

Excellent for staining Turned fruit!
