here is a rare little machine, there is little question that I would have sold
my grandmother for this back at the tender age of 16. OK, the capacity is just
10cc up on the Fizzy but you gotta have the cubes and besides that look at it!
Single race seat, long race style tank, if only Yamaha had seen fit to have
brought these lovely little motorcycles to these shores, a couple of side panel
badges to adjust to a legal capacity and bingo…
For such a small motorcycle the RD is surprisingly
capable, it's 5 speed gearbox and manual transmission allow the use of all the
ponies on offer which according to a period test is about 4 enough to return
around 53 mph and beat even my mates Fantic, the red line is 10,000 RPM and you
do need to keep it spinning as most of those horses live above 6000 RPM. The
little RD is surprisingly well equipped and comfortable to ride, the electrical
system is comprehensive, there is a tachometer as well as a speedo and of
course the bike is fitted with Yamaha's Autolube.
particular machine is a very low mileage 1974 RD60A it is very clean original
condition, it starts and runs well, it is fitted with a new piston and barrel
and will need running in but the original barrel is supplied with the bike.
be seen from the photographs this machine is in very good original condition,
the paint set is still finished in the original Yamaha Ivy Green paint, which
has faded significantly in places. The tank is in good order with no dents there
are marks and chips in the paint as can be seen in the photographs, inside
there is surface rust but the tank is solid. The tap is leaking and is not
letting fuel flow; the bike will need a new tap or replacement seal kit. The right
hand side panel has no dents or damage and the mounting points are all intact,
the oil tank is also in good shape. The tail piece is undamaged and in good
condition as is the rear mudguard, the front mudguard has two small dents in
and rear wheels are the original items and in good order, certainly useable for
a bike to be ridden and enjoyed, the chrome on the rims does have some surface

seat cover is good with no rips or tears and the base is solid.
engine starts and runs and we have given the bike a short test ride, the bike
has had a replacement piston and barrel so will require running in. The engine
makes no untoward mechanical noises and there are no signs of any issues. The
clutch works as it should and the gears select cleanly.
know of no faults in the drive train.
chassis and cycle parts are in good condition; the paint on the frame appears original
it is in good general condition but there are areas where the paint is poor and
there is superficial surface rust. The frame itself is in good undamaged
condition, the tank mounting rubbers are missing The headstock, swinging arms and wheel bearings show no signs of
the front and rear brakes are working well. On the suspension side the fork action
is smooth and damping effective, the rear shocks have some rust on the springs
but are useable, they are working and damping effectively.
will require a new battery. Currently the head and tail lights are not working;
the brake light is works on the rear brake. The front indicators have been
removed at some point in the past and are not with the bike, the horn is
working well. The hi /lo switch is broken and there is a crack in the right
hand switch gear.
instruments are in good cosmetic condition and function well.
RD is a very rare machine in the UK and this very low mileage
example has survived well. It will need a few minor jobs completing during the
winter evenings but would make a rewarding and simple little project.
