If reading this, you presumably know what the TG77 is. This unit is in great cosmetic condition. It has had one of the popular new Newhaven blue LCD screens fitted – which alone cost me about £50 to order from the USA – plus an internal battery holder for ease of service. This TG77 looks great, and sounds great for the most part, but it very sadly has 2 issues:
  • On every 2nd FM note (that is, in order played, not key/pitch), envelope looping is strange/glitchy. In particular, if the EG is set to loop at Segment 4 i.e. non-looping sustain, it actually loops between points 3 and 4 – causing weird effects on every 2nd note in voices where those 2 levels differ. The fact this only occurs on every 2nd note seems to point to a minor issue in 1 of the 2 FM IC pairs. As far as I can tell, all other functions work perfectly. Probably…this is just due to 1 cold solder joint on a data pin. It was like this when the TG77 was sold to me, and I did not investigate in depth, thinking it was due to a glitchy arpeggiator on the controller keyboard I was using. Having used a different controller, this theory has been proven not to be the case, so needless to say, I’m not too happy with the original seller. But at least this time, I have tested it with working ears, and the next buyer will know what they’re getting.
  • The Exit button has stopped working. It still seems to touch the switch below. I had to move the diodes on this row of buttons to the other side of the PCB in order to fit on the new screen, and my desoldering caused damage to some of the pads, so perhaps the electronic contact has been lost. (Also damaged were the pads on the ex-contrast resistor on the auxiliary/output borad, which was exchanged and resoldered to the appropriate components on either side, and works fine. The new resistor is a variable pot mounted on a small piece of stripboard via wires.)

Not having the guts – or, let’s face it, skill – to try resoldering any ICs or suchlike, I’m therefore selling this TG77 for cheap repair/spares to someone else who can investigate – and give this great instrument the new lease of life it deserves.

I would guess the button will just need resoldering, and probably the same with 1 or more pins on the 2nd pair of tone ICs. However, of course I cannot guarantee this, so the unit is sold as-is with returns not possible.

A bargain at this price – even if you just want the unit for the new screen or spare DACs, ROMs, buttons, jacks, cables, etc. (which, although a good reason, neither money nor space permit for me). If the TG77 does not sell as a whole, I will be splitting it for parts, and possibly keeping a few of those for myself – so now is your chance to grab the whole lot for a considerably cheaper price.

Thanks for looking and happy eBaying.
