From humble beginnings ...

Christmas 1969. Seventeen-year-old Mike Kittredge, too broke to buy his mother a present, melted some crayons to make her a candle. A neighbor saw it and convinced Mike to sell the candle to her. Delivery Problems

If you are not in when we try to deliver and cannot find a safe location to leave the package, a card will be left, where you will be able to collect your item at your local post office. Please follow the instructions on the card. If the item is not picked up within 21 days it will be returned to us. If you wish to have it redelivered, the customer will have to pay the delivery costs again, or accept refunded minus delivery charge.

If you would like to specify a safe place or a particular neighbour for your parcel to be left with, please add these instructions at the checkout.  You may also add some additional information to help the courier find your delivery address.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How can I keep my candles looking their best?
A: Candles will discolor or fade when they are exposed to intense light for extended periods. We do not recommend displaying your candles for long periods in direct sunlight, fluorescent lighting or other strong illumination. Wax will soften in temperatures over 80 degrees Fahrenheit. This may cause taper candles to bend or negatively affect the quality of your candles. Store your candles in a cool, dry place.

Here are a few tips to enjoy your Yankee Candle®:

• As with all candles, the first burn is the most important. Candles should burn one hour for every 1" in diameter of the actual candle size, permitting the wax to melt or liquefy from edge to edge of the jar.
• Always keep wicks trimmed to 1/8" while burning. If the wick exceeds 1/8", extinguish the flame, trim wick, remove trimmings and relight. The wick should be trimmed every 4 hours of burn time.
• Keep the wax pool free of wick trimmings, matchsticks or other foreign matter that might present a fire hazard.
• Always burn candles on a protected, heat-resistant surface securely placed in an appropriate holder. Do not place on secondary heat sources such as televisions, heaters, or anything that generates heat.
• Always burn candles well away from drafts, other heat sources, anything flammable and out of reach of children and pets.
• Always extinguish candles by blowing them out by placing two fingers in front of your mouth and gently blowing so as not to splatter liquid wax. Do not use water! In the case of jars, do not replace the lid while burning.
• Handle your jar with care, as the container is fragile. Avoid glass-to-glass contact when removing or replacing the lid. Do not use if cracked, chipped, or scratched, and do not refill with wax.
• The container may become hot. Handle carefully. We recommend that all jar and glass-filled candles be burned on a protected, heat resistant, dry surface.
• Discontinue use when 1/2" of wax remains at the bottom of the jar. This will prevent possible heat damage to the counter/surface or container itself.

Q: Why do candle wicks sometimes become mushroom shaped?
A: When the candle is consuming wax more quickly than the flame can burn completely, carbon deposits may develop. This will most likely occur when the wick needs to be trimmed. Blow out the flame, trim the wick to 1/8" to remove the carbon deposit and relight. Do not allow the wick trimmings or other materials to fall into the wax pool.

Q: Do you have a candle that "eats" smoke or cooking odors?
A: Our Good Air™ candles and home fragrance products are the perfect solution! Good Air contains a patented odor-eliminating formula which counteracts odors in the air. Good Air neutralizes on contact leaving behind fresh, clean air.

Q: Can I refill my jar candle when it is empty?
Do you recycle the empty jars?
A: Because glass weakens as it accumulates bumps and scratches from use, we do not recommend refilling our jars for re-use as a candle. However, they make terrific holders for all kinds of things around your home: buttons, nails, cotton balls, potpourri, seashells ... whatever small collections you may want to display. Additionally, our jars and glass lids are 100% recyclable and most local recycling agencies will accept empty Yankee Candle jars with other glass jars.

Q: How do I use Tarts® Wax Potpourri?
A: Tarts® Wax Potpourri offer you exceptional home fragrancing without the mess of traditional simmering potpourri. Place Tarts® Wax Potpourri in the top of a dry potpourri warmer and never add water. Light one of the unscented tealights (never use scented tea lights) for a controlled low flame made especially for potpourri burners. When melted, the wax potpourri will release its wonderful fragrance for up to 8 hours. Once all the fragrance has been diffused from the wax pool, allow the wax to come back to a solid at room temperature. Remove the wax from the warmer unit by applying slight, even pressure to the wax with the palm of your hand. The wax disc will easily release from the warmer. Discard the wax disc and begin another Tart® Wax Potpourri. You can also mix one half of two different fragrances to create your own unique blend of aromas.

Q: How can I remove candle wax from fabric?
A: Whenever available, we suggest that you consult the laundering instructions provided by the manufacturer of the tablecloth or other fabric. Professional cleaners are also valuable sources of information. If attempting to clean the item yourself, it is important to allow the wax to completely harden. Once hard, gently chip away the larger pieces of wax from the fabric. After much of the wax has been removed, run hot water through the fabric. Citrus-based or oil-based cleaners are the most effective in removing stains.

Q: How do Yankee Candle make candles smell so authentic?
A: That's their secret! They actually have a committee dedicated to researching fragrances. Once the committee recommends a candle, a separate group of individuals from throughout our company test it for authenticity of fragrance and quality of burn.

Q: Which is your most fragrant candle?
A: Our jar candles contain the highest percentage of fragrance oil. More fragrance is emitted from our large jar and 2-wick cylinder candles because the pool of melted wax it produces is larger.

Q: Why are some fragrances discontinued?
A: Consumer tastes change over time. As a result certain fragrances may decline in popularity to the point that it is no longer feasible to continue making them. In some cases, we have an exciting new fragrance to bring to our customers and we need to make room in our product offering to bring them to you.

Q: What is the difference between Yankee candles and another brand?
A: The Yankee Candle Company has been devoted to the art of crafting candles for over forty years. They use only the highest quality materials: pure cotton wicks, glassware, and premium-grade, highly-refined paraffin waxes specially blended for optimum burning and fragrancing performance — all made by master candle makers. They also offer the most fragrances you will find.

Q: If I wanted to use my empty Yankee Candle jar for storage, how can I remove the metal wick base?
A: This is a relatively easy process. Once all wax is removed, simply pour in enough rubbing alcohol to cover the base and allow the jar to sit for a few days. The rubbing alcohol should soften the glue and release the base. It is important that you allow the rubbing alcohol time to work and that you don't pry at the base with your hand or any object.

Q: Why does it say to discontinue using the candle when a half inch of wax remains?
A: The glass can get hot on the bottom as the flame nears the base of the jar and most of the wax has been consumed. When this instruction is followed the glass will not get too hot. For your safety, we also recommend burning all candles on heat resistant surfaces, such as a plate or trivet.

All Deliveries are packed in the best possible materials to protect your items and the environment and should arrive in immaculate condition. We re-use as much packaging where possible, and ask the customer to recycle cardboard packaging to help protect the environment.
