Shirley and Virgil Benn, Signed

7/8" long, 5/8" high

Tribal Affiliation:

Zuni Paiute Hopi Tewa

Country of Manufacture:

United States

Sterling Silver

I am offering for your consideration a signed tie pin in the form of an endearing bear head by the famous Shirley and Virgil Benn. It can be worn in button holes, so it doesn't poke holes in your fabrics. A button hole in the pocket of a shirt, top of a shirt placket, or in a collar, would be perfect for this wonderful small bear.

Shirley is a daughter of Daisy Hooee and a great grandaughter of Nampeyo. She and her husband have won prizes just about everywhere and are represented in the best museums and galleries world wide. Their pieces command top pricing. The couple cut and buff and set their stones and also carve and engrave them. Their work is distinctive, valuable and very beautiful. This piece uses brown pen shell, abalone shell, jet and turquoise. It's simple and it's aesthetically quite perfect in my view.  The fur is carefully engraved as are the details of the face and tiny dot inlay is done for the eye and nose in jet and turquoise. All is perfectly executed. It has a clip in the back to hold it in place. You can wear it on a hat, pocket, shirt, jacket, collar or a handbag. No reason to confine it to a tie.

It measures about 7/8" wide and about 5/8" high and it has no problems; it's in great vintage, collectible and wearable condition. It is signed "V & S Benn" with an engraving tool as they commonly signed their pieces.

Elsewhere in my store I have a stunning pin and pendant by the couple in the form of a mudhead figure which represents the mudheads who dance with the Shalako figures during the Shalako ceremonies. This is one of the most beautiful Mudhead figures I've seen them do. It looks better in person than in pictures. It's 2-1/8" tall and about 1-7/8" wide and it's in excellent vintage condition, without problems. It's unmarked for silver content but it's sterling silver and it's signed by the couple. It is offered separately but a picture is included above.

If you love bears which are healing figures in the Zuni tradition, you will surely love this pin, which is quite unusual and so appealing. Indeed alluring! Great to add to your collection.
