No wonder Spike disliked talking about this film..If like me you have read the book, listened to Spike's tapes, and other comments on his war years, you will wonder where did they get the script from? The actors were clearly not enjoying the making of this film, almost as if they could not believe the lines or the situations. The idea of putting the character of 'Spike' into situations that he had already identified in his book as happening to others just to give 'the look' of comedy failed. Fans of his must have shuddered at the very inaccurate portrayal of characters we had grown to know through his excellent writing. Had Spike been able to have produced or directed then one feels that a better film would have been the outcome; as it is, it is one that could and should be best forgotten, unless there is a place in film directors school for an item listed 'How to not make a film'. How sad that such a genius should have this travesty as part of his very professional life. IanRead full review
