The Austin Healey Sprite was launched in 1958 with 948cc “A” series engine similar to a Minor but with twin carbs and startling looks which quickly earned it the name Frogeye, or Bugeye in the States. It was the first mainstream sportscar not to use a separate chassis.

This car is a 1959 Frogeye, supplied new to Lookers in Manchester presented here in its original colour of Leaf Green and now fully re-fitted thanks to a recent no expense spared restoration. The specification is substantial with later 1275cc “A” series engine, “type 9” 5 speed gearbox, “Frontline” front suspension with telescopic shock absorbers and disc brakes and anti roll bar. During 2009/2010 a further £8k + was spent on a detailed body restoration and re-fit to the very highest standard – just about every component is new or re-furbished including new heavy duty fibreglass bonnet, (as favoured by the factory to reduce weight for competition) fully re-built carbs and instruments and seemingly endless mechanical and trim items.

On the road this Frogeye is quick, tight and well sorted – more than a sum of its parts and more of a contender than its standard appearance implies – think “Cooper S” Frogeye if they had ever made such a thing! Ready to use and comes with substantial history file, may bills, old MOT’s and original buff logbook.
