Charting our rise and fall, Nichola...s Crane's The Making of the British Landscape covers the ice age to the present thoroughly without over relying on historical characters and their exploits; saving that kind of epic for a different sort of book. Place takes centre stage, and our environment: ancient places; the wild wood; rivers; sea; climate; roads, streets, buildings are the source of the book's people and communities that are given life by the author. In Crane's own words it is "a geostory" rather than a history and this reader tends to agree with him. Policy makers; politicians; city hall: anyone who has a stake in shaping our future, shouldn't ignore this book.
