I'm a big fan of Bronica cameras, and at one time owned all three of their models (ETRSi, GS-1 and SQ-A). The SQ-A has become my favorite because, in addition to shooting 6x6 negatives, it can also be fitted with 645 and 35mm backs. It's a compact and reasonably light camera, especially with the standard 80mm lens. I don't like looking down into a Waist Level Finder, so I use Prism finders, both metered and non-metered. The SQ-AM (with a built-in motorized winder) is a big bulky and heavier because of the additional batteries required to power the winder. But the SQ-A is a joy to hold with or without a grip (I actually use a modified Prinz grip, which allows me to advance the film by using the Bronica's winding handle, which is both easy and fun to use). The SQ-A in any configuration is, in my opinion, a great camera. Highly recommended.Read full review
Hasselblad. Jako jedinou nevýhodu za několikaleté používání tohoto systému jsem shledal témeř nemožnost připojení digibacku (tato možnost zde je, ale je to možné přes velmi drahé redukce) --------------------------------------- english version (GoogleTranslator): Bronica SQ Series Cameras (SQ, SQA, SQB, SQAi, SQAm) are currently around only option for people who want a machine for the 6x6 format but they are not satisfied with the machines of eastern origin (Pentacon Six, Kiev 88), but can't purchase of top equipment by Hasselblad. Bronica (speaking also of ETR and GS) offers a reliable system with a relatively extensive accessories at an affordable price. So any owner of a base assembly can purchase additional lenses (range 35 to 500 mm), several models of viewfinders (90° measuring/non-measuring version, chimney, 45° or simple waist-level finder) and much more. A great thing that Bronica is offering to exchange backs (for 120/220 film, 645 back, or small format film to with pictures 24x60mm). In my case find positively to beside Hasselblad slightly larger and heavier. As the only disadvantage for several years using this system, I found almost impossible connection digital back (this is possible here, but it can be very costly over third-party reduction)Read full review
I am a professional commercial photographer and have shot extensively with both Bronica and Hasselblad for many years and in my opinion Bronica is a much superior camera. I have shot side by side with both cameras at the same subject and the Bronica optics are every bit as sharp. Not only that, but the lens shutter is electronically controlled by the camera body, making the shutter speed consistently the same from lens to lens. Hasselblad has a goofy double baffle system that will eclipse shutter speeds of 1/8 of a second or slower. The internal body baffle closes before the lens shutter has finished cutting the exposure prematurely short. It’s poor engineering for such an expensive camera. Not only that, but if you take a lens or film back off at the wrong time you can jam the camera. And what about the cheap little plastic flash sync lock that always breaks and takes months to have fixed. I could go on and on about HASSEL-blads. Bronica has none of these problems. The camera system is less expensive, better engeneered for real world shooting, cheaper to have fixed and more durable by far than Hasselblad. It’s unfortunate that so many photographers are such sheep and have always purchased Hasselbald just because everyone else has one. Bronica has been the better camera.Read full review
It's just a Hasselblad owners' fable about how good is it. I have one with 2 lenses and now when I have collected ALL Bronica lenses I will sell it. I got Bronica body with wlf, 4 lenses and 4 backs and also rapid grip-S. And after selling Hassel with 2 lenses and 2 backs I'll compensate all Bronica gear =) That's why Hasselblad is good =) Bronica lenses are sharp, have great creamy bokeh (compared to Hassie's pentagons), and their quality is much better ! All my friends with Hasselblads know their repairman very good =) I never had problems with my Bronica. Also Bronica have great grip ! And Hassie's grip is absolutely awkward after Bronica experience. So if you want to shoot 6x6 just grab inexpensive Bronica and go ahead =) Believe me, you will get the best photos from that camera. Best regards to all !Read full review
I have only used digital cameras for the past ten years. Recently, while going though some old transparencies, I was struck by the colors and detail visible in medium format Velvia and Provia images. I decided to do some more film work and the Bronica seemed to be a good choice, both from the standpoint of price and image quality. I chose the SQ format because I have a lot of Hasselblad and Rollei experience with the 6X6 frame and I like not having to rotate the camera for vertical compositions. The Bronica is living up to my expectations.
