I bought this book because I was preparing to start work on a piece of embroidery for an annual exhibition. Each year I try to present different styles of work and/or presentation. I usually base my designs on floral subjects, as I also work on botanical watercolours. The notion of exploring stumpwork this year led me to this book. This is a huge volume both in terms of size (over 390 pages) and also detailed instructions and materials used for each tiny detail, whether it be a leaf or an insect. I was - and still am - intrigued as to how the author makes this often daunting form of embroidery so accessible to today's stitchers. Step by step instructions with detailed illustrations are set out on every page, together with coloured illustrations of completed work past and present. There are projects to follow, but I am using the book as a reference book to pick and mix elements which I have included in my own designs - for example, a spider and its web, a ladybird, a bumble bee or a clutch of berries and leaves. I think this is a truly amazing book. I have also purchased two other equally impressive stumpwork books by this author and have not been disappointed by any of them.Read full review
