Very pleased with this DVD player which I ...shall keep until the streaming market settles further and prices come down. HDMI link means best sub BluRay standard from my DVDs and sound quality good.

If like me you have ...recently purchased either a new generation HD ready or full HD Tv then the problem you will face is the same as mine, yes we all know that a Blue Ray player is the way forward especially since a decent sony or others can be purchased for under £200.00, but i had over a hundred dvds which i have collected over the years and using the scart connection into my new tv they looked worse in my opinion than with my old CRT Sony, i was not a happy bunny, that is until i purchased my Denon 1920. Why? firstly because you can throw away that old scart lead and connect your player using a hdmi lead (which cost anything from £5.00 upto £50.00) i paid £10.00 for mine and its just fine. So will it really make a big difference using a hdmi lead rather than a scart lead, YES YES and YES again it really will, however next problem, quite a few brands now sell dvd players that connect via a hdmi and they all claim to improve your picture quality by using a chip (Not the kind you have with your fish)that is but one inside the dvd player itself that upscales and will enhance the picture upto hd quality. So you might well ask, which one should i buy? well i had no idea so i started reading loads of reviews online and DENON was rated highly again and again so i started a search on ebay for all Denon 1920 1930 and 1940 models (All RATED TOP NOTCH IN THE REVIEWS) and i ended up winning a 1920 model for £40.00 and i love it, the picture and sound really is so much better than my old dvd player connected with a scart lead. HOWEVER, why is there always a however i hear you say, well nothing to serious as any of the Denon Dvd players will without doubt improve the picture quality and sound of your dvd collection, its just that even the very best upscaling will not really be anything close to Blue Ray, as those next generation dvds just carry far more Information on the disc itself and the picture quality is mind blowing. However my Denon 1920 sits happily under my Blue Ray player at home and i can enjoy all my old dvds with a quality picture and sound i had not imagined possible before! as could you for less than fifty quid! "A REAL BARGAIN"
I have fantastic Toshiba HDD/DVD recorder whi...ch I love and use as my main DVD player as well. I bought this Denon for my church as I had read good thing about Denon DVD players. I thought it best to check it out at home first. When I put a disc in I could not believe how good the sound was. I use the digital coax from my Toshiba and just swapped it to the Denon. I could not believe how much better the Denon was. I had no idea that it could make such a difference, after all I was using a digital output. My Onkyo/Q Acoustic 5.1 surround sound system (tested in Dolby Digital and DTS from the Denon) has never sounded so good. The picture (connected via component to my 36" Panasonic CRT) was fractionally sharper than the Toshiba as well but it was the sound that blew me away. I want one of my own now. Guess I'll be borrowing the church one from time to time. If quality sound is your thing with a great picture. Grab yourself one. P.S. Have not tried the HDMI output as i have a CRT TV but have read very good reviews about the upscaling in this machine as well.
I own a Denon DVD-1920 which I've had from new.... I have looked at selling it from time to time since upgrading to a Blu-Ray player but decided given it's purchase price that while it's now little used it deserves a place in the bedroom. I would agree with the previous reviews that the sound qaulity is fantastic and very comparable to some top end CD transports. SACD is only available via multi-channel outputs which involves more cable but a good result. Surround and stereo are available analogue or digital. I have also always found the picture to be extremely good, far out performing many units in it's price and class. Blacks are defined and give good depth while colours are crisp and movement smooth and well handled. With reference to the previous review I have found that this unit gives a brilliant performance both on my LCD screen and LCD projector (am I about to start the LCD, Plasma, DLP debate?) It's not really HD is it lets face it, but even at 100" the images remain as good as you can possibly hope to expect from upscaled DVD. The problem is more likely to be with compatablilty with the previous reviewers equipment, in that upscaling is an algorithm, the display also uses algorithm's and while rare they can clash with some unpleasant results. I would recomend that if you're not ready or don't have the budget to go Blu-ray this is a pretty damn good option.
