Grow Light Ballasts

Grow Light Ballasts

Grow light systems are made up of a reflector, a grow light bulb and a ballast. The ballast regulates and controls how much power the light bulb receives.

Differences between magnetic and digital ballasts

  • Magnetic – Ballasts that are magnetic consist of a copper or aluminium coil that sits on a steel core transformer, and a capacitor. Sometimes an igniter is also included
  • Digital – Digital electrical ballasts are microprocessors that do all of the work of controlling the current of electricity

Choosing the perfect grow light ballast

  • Growing considerations – There are many different types of ballasts available. The type of grow light bulb that you need for the job will generally determine the type of ballast that you should use. Choose one that works with any reflector, socket and grow light bulb on the market
  • Lighting choice – When you are putting together a lighting system for your indoor plants it is important to match the ballast to the grow light bulbs that you are using. Some ballasts can be used with HPS (high pressure sodium bulbs) and metal halide bulbs
  • Right choice – The ideal ballast fires at a high frequency and is highly efficient and extremely quiet. High efficiency means that the ballast also produces very little heat

Types of grow light ballasts

  • Complete kit ballast reflector – The complete kit contains everything you need to grow your plants, and is ideal for growers on a budget
  • Digital ballast – Digital ballasts give you the flexibility to power two different grow light bulbs simultaneously. Most ballasts are built with four power modes to boost the efficiency of your light source. Digital ballasts are quieter, cooler and highly efficient
  • Magnetic ballasts – Cheaper, bigger, bulkier and heavier than the digital ballast, the magnetic ballast produces a lot more heat.
