I first purchased a Fine Pix 601 around 8 years ago. Price then was around £450. I only had the camera 12 mths and lost it at the airport along with other things when my bag was taken. This is a fantastic camera albeit a bit old now. I say i have always had my best bictures from a 601. this is why I have purchased another on ebay some years later. Well pleased wit results. JB
I have been using the F601 for some 4 years now, and it remains a very good camera in my opinion. My Sister bought one and asked me to learn how to use it and show her when I visited her in South Africa, and the wildlife shots I got are superb, both from long range and close too. On my return I bought one for myself, and have not regretted it. It is very simple to operate, so much so that I am now looking for one for my 85 year old mother, who has never had a digital camera. The ease of use is very noticeable when I am taking pictures of my model aircraft in flight - it is so easy I can actually fly the model with one hand and take decent pictures with the other. I rarely use the docking cradle, I just hook up to my PC directly, and charge with the socket charger. Whilst I have no doubt there are far better cameras now available, and I have used some myself for mates, the ease of use of the 601 means that despite its now being somewhat dated, you end up with a better picture. I often write articles and reviews for websites and my club magazine, and although I am just an ordinary user, the quality of the photographs is a feature of many of these, and in fact one wildlife website is using one of my pictures as the standard reference for the species, a better picture than any other they have. So anyone who buys a 601 can get very good pictures, and I am sure will not be disappointed. The reason I am not rating this excellent is because it is dated.Read full review
The Fuji F0601 was Fuji's first deployment of its 3-Megapixel Super-CCD equipped cameras, which were heavily promoted as writing a 6-Megapixel output file. This magic trick was possible via interpolation, each pixel location site on the CCD had two co-located sites aranged diagonally to each other. True the output file gave the dimensions of a 6-million-pixel image, but the actual image didn't have the image depth of an image from a true 6-megapixel CCD sensor, After being ticked off by many reviewers for this technical slight-of-hand pixel card-trick Fuji stopped using these imagers that used the interpolation method to gain image pixels that didn't exist in reality. In fact some Web observers noted that these SuperCCDs had a shorted life-span that other more convential mapped image CCDs- the CCD like any imaging chip was runing at a refresh frequency, like the CPU in a PC. So if the user switched on the camera which was placed on a tripod of hung round the neck in viewing/standby mode before capting an image/taking a picture then this time ideling non-productive processing time of what the CCD was viewing was accumilated as part of the CCDs MTBF (Mean Time Between Failuret), timeline total. CCDs have such a lifetime profile, so a CCD in a professional camera used in Studio of constant Press photography, is probably going to fail sooner than a less robust CCD, used in an amateur point-&-shoot digicam. However, even CCDs used in such amateur didicams can be adversely aged by being left running for long periods without image capture, the work-load on the CCD is ensentially the same in both instances, the only difference between the two states of viewing/standby and image capture is the route of the live image data, in the former it is being processed and being displayed on an LCD screen, wheras the image capture mode an extra group of imaging support chips are employed to process the image to storage on a Flash Memory Card or other storage medium. Another practical shortcoming of Fugi's F601 family was the deployment of slim Lithium-Ion battery cells, which did delivery a longer working life than the earlier Nickel Cadnium rechargeable cells, but also had a limit on the number of recharge cycles before limited capacity problems or chemical stress failure ended their useful lifespan. So it was, only weeks after receiving this used digicam that all 3 Lithium-Ion cells ceased working - purchasing additional Lithium-Ion cells was an option but this would have exceeded the cost of the bid used to win this eBay item, so this Fuji F601 has joined other failed Consumer Electronics junk in the spare room! Unique/dedicated rechargeable battery-packs are never continious good news when used in consumer digicams, the lifespan the second owner can expect is often dictated by the conditions of use set down by the first owner, too much or too little use can have a negative impact on the second owner of the camera - which is why eBay's advanced Search Facility based on completed Listings price will show the Market's invaluable rating of the Lifespan on any Make & Model of consumer digicam. Bear in mind even if users spend Millions of dollars on the best imagimg technology it all ages sooner or later, as NASA's extensive refurbishment of the Hubble Space telescope has shown to a worldwide audience. The main problem with Hubble's repair was NASA could not search eBay's auctions for suitable used sparte parts at a bargain price!Read full review
This is a good example of a quality digital camera of an early generation. This means its menus are a bit clunky to use or even get used to but they are all there and the camera's controls and photographic options are comprehensive. Moreover it was a well made piece of equipment which continues to function well after 6 or perhaps it is eight years of reportedly regular use. This particular example came complete with all its ancilliary gear such as charger, holder and cable, as well as CD and all instructions. Apart from taking just stills it can do video recording and audio too. I bought it as it was a complete package that was in working order despite not being that recent and so did not make much of a price , I am ashamed to say.
