I first saw this film in 1981 at a late-night showing at the (now long demolished) ABC cinema in my home town. To say I was blown away would be an understatement. After a brief voice-over introduction, full of foreboding and accompanied by blurred images of real-life mayhem, the film drops the viewer straight into its world. And what a world! One where life is a constant battle for survival in a terrifying post-apocalyptic wasteland that draws on the then prescient fears of both imminent nuclear immolation of the early 80s Cold War intertwined with rust-belt post-punk nihilism and feral survivalism. The plot is minimal. Characters are well-formed but all are secondary to the film's central driving force, that of the chase. The bad guys are truly bad, the good guys try to be good and are doing their best but is their best good enough? The film's unrelenting bleakness is hilariously interspersed with some classic moments of Aussie black humour and a clear cut conclusion is reached. It’s hard to pick holes in the whole, there are one or two bits of poor production, but given the budget it’s not surprising. If you only ever watch one of the Mad Max series, please make it this one. Mad Max One is a very good film, Mad Max Three is Hollywood jumping on, and sanitising, the bandwagon in the worst possible way - avoid it at all costs. Will they make Mad Max Four? Personally I don't care, but watching Road Warrior for the umpteenth time, I still get a shiver down my spine at the sound of the wind whistling through the wasteland... Humungus!!!Read full review
By far the best of the Mad Max trilogy, this second story hits all the right notes and inspired a myriad of post apocalyptic, desert-based low-budget copycats in its wake. More sci-fi thaan the first film, nomad max encounters more adventures in a world where petrol is power, culminating in a mother-of-all-chases. I won't spoil the plot- just watch it.
