I recently purchased a number of Olympus compact cameras the EC2 being one of them. Unlike the ECR and similar Olympus range-finders the EC2 (and the EC) uses a rather forgiving zone focusing system making this an excellent camera for anyone wanting to shoot street photography. The EC2's focusing ring clicks between ranged focal stops so you don't have to worry about accidently knocking it out of focus if your changing orientation or adjusting the cameras positioning whilst shooting. I've found this to be a problem with the ECR as the focusing ring does not have much resistance and turns freely with minimal effort. Switching between focal ranges is very fast making it an easy camera to use. This camera excels in those situations when you are suddenly presented with unexpected or quick moving subject and you need to react quickly in setting up the shot. Like most of Olympus compacts it has a surprisingly high quality lens. The EC/EC2/ECR all have a E.Zuiko 42mm f/2.8 lens, which is still a good lens even by todays standards so don't underestimate this little camera as its certainly capable of producing some serious work. The EC2 is a small but sturdily built camera that oozes quality, you can literally feel the build quality when its held in hand. Certainly some of the EC2's best features (other than the lens) are the cameras small size and the quiet shutter operation, both of which help make this camera very covert, again very helpful when shooting for candid shots and you don't want your subjects to notice you. Furthermore as its smaller (and lighter) than a larger more professional looking SLR Iv found that my subjects have noticed me less and/or have been less intimidated and more inclined to be in my pictures. Its worth noting that exposure is controlled electronically which has has its good and bad points. Firstly your going to need batteries (PC640A) downside is these aren't easy to find and are fairly expensive when you compare them to other batteries. I recommend buying from the 'small battery company'(Google them). Secondly, this camera has automatic exposure only so there is no manual control over aperture or shutter speed which some may find problematic. My feeling is that this is less of a problem than one might think and I would argue that auto shutter speed is actually a benefit certainly where street photography is concerned. Some sort of Aperture priority mode would have made this camera perfect but I feel that over all the cameras many other great features redeem these short comings. In short if you enjoy vintage film cameras and want a small light compact camera to shoot street then this is for you.Read full review
Camera right size, but unable to function? Aware when purchased, but unable to clear problem. Still looks good on the shelf. R
