This is a beautiful film that I did not discover until recently. I was, as I'm sure many others are, put off slightly, by the S&M theme. This is defiantly a 'Don't judge a book by it's cover' situation. It follows emotionally broken Lee (Maggie Gylennhaal) fresh out from counselling, and trying to establish herself in a world which doesn't understand her. Getting a secretarial job for lawyer Mr Grey (James Spader), her life is turned upside-down in a crazy journey of self-discovery, where painfully shy Lee finds her inner woman, under the unorthodox tutelage of Mr Grey. This is a romantic comedy with an edge for people who want more depth than the run-of-the-mill slushy rom-coms provide. I heartily recommend this to anyone to give it a try, and be pleasantly surprised. It is one of my favourite films. It has won 14 awards (including best actor, actress, and screenplay) and was nominated for another 17. Gylennhaal and Spader put in amazing performances.Read full review
Genre: Drama, Romance, Comedy(depending on your sense of humour) Synopsis: A young woman, who has recently been released from a mental hospital(for self harming), gets a job as a secretary to a demanding lawyer, where their employer-employee relationship turns into a sexual, sadomasochistic one(slave master). strong sexuality, some nudity, depiction of behavioral disorders. never seen before but like James Spader as an actor
Love stories don't come much more bizarre than this touching tale of a sadomasochistic relationship. Lee (Maggie Gyllenhaal) becomes secretary and under the control of Edward (James Spader). He triggers unexpected desires in the delicate young Lee, and using refined control techniques, provides her with confidence as well as sexual revelation. Spader and Gyllenhaal are excellent as two loners who realise they're perfectly matched, and there is some very dark humour throughout. Highly recommended.
This film has got to be the sexiest film going. You can keep all the same old boring boring kit off lets screw films. This just builds up and up and up. Its not just about sex or spanking its about giving all you are to someone. It is a truly beautiful love story. Of course if you're not into the whole Domination/submission thing you probably will find it "very weird" as someone i know put it. James Spader is fabulous as always. Why oh why dont we have more films like this.
you could call this a love story you could say that is an emotional journey through psychiatric recovery you could say that this is a modern exploration of human sexuality in its various forms but................... the reality is your buying this film for the spanking and ohhh boy your in for a treat, dont interllectualise it or spend hours trying to figure it out ~Just sit back and enjoy it !!!!
