I bought this as I'm renting property; the house doesn't have either a working TV aerial nor a satellite dish & I'm on a short contract but do have good broadband.
ATV 3rd gen is certainly great at airplay mirroring, I have a macbook & family have ipod touches & an iPhone. All work great so I can stream from the Internet via those devices but note that the iphone does get worryingly hot after an hour of watching BBC iplayer for example. Setting-up the iPod is less intuitive than setting-up the iPhone but it does work fine.
1 wire for power & 1 for HDMI means a happier wife!
Movie selection is good, HD to boot! works great for iTunes collection on an old mac-mini too.
Baseball & American football apps are of no interest to me, my family & probably not to the majority of Brits. Sports fans would need UK focussed "channels."
Don't like the price of old British TV series or older "films" ;-)
Ideally it would have an app store & a built-in browser. The lack of a built-in BBC iPlayer app really takes the shine off it for my everyday use but I guess most people have terrestrial TV... perhaps I should have bought the older model that can have other software loaded via the so-called jailbreak but recognise my needs are somewhat niche.
I bought this device so I could pair it up to my ipad or iPhone and watch movies from the internet. you also have the option of Netflix,YouTube vevo etc.Theres nothing really that I dislike about this product, I cannot compare with other similar devices as I have not tried anything else.
Not quite as simple to set up if you're over 60 and don't have the assistance of children or a reasonable understanding of basic technology.
Thankfully I fit into one of those groups as I have children aged in their mid 20's, who lets be honest, have a much greater understanding of these things.
Initially after i had set it up i kept losing the signal and the programme would stop playing. I thought I had installed everything correctly but when my son came to visit he disovered by looking in the settings drop down menu, that although i had correctly entered the UK as the area, in a further additional drop down box, it still showed my area as 'New York'. My son alterted this to 'London' and hey presto no more disruption.
A great bit of kit which allows movies on my iPad to be streamed onto my telly.
Main advantage being that the iPad has a 10" screen and my TV a 63" screen ... as I'm 60 you can imagine which i prefer. Also the picture quality doesn't suffer, so for me a great bit of kit.
Good Gizmo. Good price. Perfect for watching or listening to anything you have brought in Itunes. The female/Robotic voice is an absolute nightmare but was easy to turn off. It was quite straightforward joining my keyboard via bluetooth (made everything else easy during set up ) and also logging in to my broadband router.
This is good but pricy, the search is a pain but as its a small remote I suppose u have to make do. You have to use 100 characters for a review, hence this bit. 123456789123456789123456789123456789aqwesdxcftre.
Very neatly links all apple devices to the TV and provides other subscription TV and film services.
Nice clean interface and fairly easy to navigate.
That's about it!
Bought this to do one thing only, and it does it well. Happy enough with my Panasonic Viera 42" Plasma TV (not a Smart Tv) I wanted to be able to view and hear upon it - without any cabling - whatever image happened to be on my iPad, from whatever channel, app, game, library image or video, film, website, email attachment or what. No worries, and saved me having to buy a Smart Tv. It actually does much more than this. Instructions are simple enough, but gabbled in oriental-American-English at a rate roughly equivalent to the product of a dog race commentary and a fish market auctioneer, coupled with an old 33rpm vinyl record being played back at 78rpm !
Very good picture and sound quality. Great for mirroring my MacBook Pro, and for streaming in general. No issues as yet. Wish it came with more apps like 4od but with mirroring from the laptop this is not a problem.
