I grew up with Bond movies. Now my son is getting into them, I can sit and watch the gruesome sexism, violence and petty snobbery - and it still doesn't matter! For me what always held Bond films together was the music (and this is one of the many reasons why the new-look ultra real approach with Daniel Craig doesn't seem to work - it seems like they don't want to use too much of THAT riff anymore). The Dam Busters (DVD, 2005)
Period piece but thoughtful performance by Redgrave as Barnes Wallis. One of the classic WW2 movies, with THE great title music (by Eric Coates). The Dam Busters, made in the 50's, was shot in black and white so that authentic footage, particularly of the testing of Wallis's famous bouncing bomb, could be seemlessly included.

Although apparently something of a departure from the actual story of Elliot Ness, the Treasury agent who attempted to deal with the Chicago gangs of the prohibition era, THE UNTOUCHABLES is a compelling yarn which keeps you gripped, nicely shot and with a crisp script (David Mamet), great score (Morricone) and a top cast. Kevin Costner is great as Ness, De Niro suitably disturbing as the mercurial Al Capone and Charles Martin Smith, Andy Garcia and Sean Connery making up the Untouchables. A ...
