The circumstances under which the recording session from which this record was produced were far from promising but nevertheless Art Pepper rose to the challenge of playing with Miles Davis' sidemen, Red Garland, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones. The result was a classic record. His high pitched keening voice still makes the hairs on the back of neck stand up or alternatively brings a tear to my eye just like it did when I first heard it back in 1968.
