• Qing Period Bronze Censer with Xuande four-character mark late 18th Century/19th

    This little Bronze Censer dates to late 18th Century /Early 19th Century. Of archaistic form with a cast band of scrolling foliage flanked by a pair of beast head handle, on three feet cast with flora décor. The compressed body has a pair of small loop handles. Four-character mark of the Ming dynasty Xuande reign period (1426-1435). To the base but this piece is slightly later into the Qing dynasty 8.5cm across and 5cm tall. The Xuande period is acknowledged as a high point in the production of bronze works of art, and the vast majority of bronze censers made during the 17th and 18th centuries have Xuande marks to their bases. This includes the apocryphal Xuande mark pictured which appears on the base of this 18th-19th century bronze censer.

    The circular censer is heavily cast, with thick walls. The reign mark forms part of the casting, within a recessed rectangle. It carries the four character seal mark of the Tongzhi Emperor (Tong zhi nien zhi).
