Daiwa Vintage Rods
Ardent anglers and collectors of antique fishing tackle will be tempted by the many iconic Daiwa vintage fishing rods which can be found today. Daiwa is one of the world's most respected brands of fishing equipment and is famous for its state of the art technology.
The Japanese company, which was founded in 1958, was one of the first to introduce densely packed carbon fibres for fishing rods in the late 1970s. Daiwa entered the UK market in the 1980s. Vintage Daiwa rods are much sought after by collectors for their history and legacy.
A rare vintage Daiwa which would be a find for the keen collector is the 'Black Shadow Match' rod which dates back to the middle of the 1980s, when it was classed as one of the brand's best rods. This three-piece rod has blanks made from Kevlar and carbon with a cork handle.
Also highly sought after are the rods produced when Daiwa sponsored former champion angler Tom Pickering in the 1980s and 1990s. Tom Pickering had an influence on the company's match rods which were made in Great Britain. A Daiwa 'Tom Pickering WHISKER Match Winner' 13ft waggler rod is among those which can be found on the market today and it is distinctive for its flattened cork handle.
A collector will also covet a pair of Daiwa 'Kevlar Whisker' carp rods which date back to the 1980s and which were much admired at the time. The rods have slim brown-coloured blanks with a cross-weave pattern, gold inlay eye guides and a Fuji screw down reel fixing. Alternatively there is a stunning 8ft two-piece carbon graphite trout fly fishing rod with a cork handle and a graphite screw down reel seat. The blank is burgundy coloured and it has gold-plated snake guides with burgundy whips tipped with gold thread.
Other vintage Daiwa rods that can be bought today include a 'Sensor Carbon Match' from 1987, which is a three-piece rod and is 10ft long. You can also find a 'Carbon Regal' fly fishing rod which is a two-piece with black blanks with red whippings, a 7.5inch cork handle with a screw winch reel fitting and eight guides including a tip and a hook keeper ring.
The fly fishing angler will like the Daiwa Graphite 'CF98' which is a three-piece rod for salmon fishing. It is 13ft in length and is coloured green with red tipped whippings. Also available is a Daiwa 'Matchman Ledger Mark II' which is a 9ft two-piece carbon rod with sliding collar reel fittings.
