A pair of mid 19th c Staffordshire Wally Dogs, for this type of ware they are in remarkably good condition, and suffer only loss to the gilding and some overglaze paint, with the odd h'line to the glaze, quite often with these dogs there are cracks caused by firing and inconsistencies with the thickness of the clay, displaying well these are 315 mm, 12.25" tall.

    A pair of beautifully finished 19th c Staffordshire Wally Dog's with glass eyes. They do have crazing to the glaze, patches of light discolouration and wear to the gilding, one also has a light h'line on the tail eminating from the central join, a lot less than is normally found, these are well made and the the body of clay has been well pressed, giving a lighter body that is less likely to suffer from firing shrinkage.

    Traditionally this type of ware was made at Jackfield, near Coalport in Shropshire, England. But excavations and other evidence suggest that such pieces were also made in Staffordshire and at other ceramic centres in the 18th century. This pair apart from wear to the gilding (very little remains) and some firing spots to the top of the head, are in superb condition, Jackfield is largely a generic name for a class of earthenware decorated with a glossy black glaze. they display very well and would suit both contemporary or period decoration, sizes are 320 mm, 12.5" tall.
