  • Antique Figurine Eurydice Classical Bisque Porcelain with Dog and Snake c 1860

Here we have a lovely antique Victorian period bisque porcelain figurine of a semi-topless, classical figure with a dog and snake. I think it is Eurydice from Greek mythology - a wood nymph who won the heart of Orpheus. She was bitten by a snake and was sent to the underworld. Cerberus the multi-headed dog was turned docile by the music of Orpheus. The figurine is nicely modelled and the dog has one paw on the girl's lap and another on the snake. Her eyes are downcast she has has a floral band in her lap. The figure has some hand colouring in pastel shades and gilding to the base. It stands 4 3/4 in. high and the base has a diameter of 2 3/8ths in. It weighs 187g unpacked and is in good order with just a little rubbing to the gilding and some body fritting, dating from manufacture.
