  • Frank Zappa - Over-Nite Sensation

While the music is some of Zappa's most accessible, the apparent callousness and/or stunning sexual explicitness of "Camarillo Brillo," "Dirty Love," and especially "Dinah-Moe Humm" leave him on shaky aesthetic ground.

  • Hip-O - Empty Glass

Pete Townshend was heading toward collapse as the '70s turned into the '80s. Signs of that crept out on Face Dances, but he saved a full-blown exploration of his psyche for Empty Glass, his first solo album since Who Came First, a vanity project released to little notice around Who's Next (so limited in its distribution that Empty Glass seemed like his solo debut).

  • ZAPPA FRANK - Studio Tan

Studio Tan is one of four albums culled from the ill-fated 1976 box set Läther and released by Warner Bros. without Frank Zappa having a word to say about the final product (including the horrible artwork).

  • Hip-O - Who Came First

Pete Townshend's first solo album was a homespun, charming forum for low-key, personal songs that weren't deemed suitable for the Who, as well as spiritual paeans (direct and indirect) to his spiritual guru Meher Baba.

  • ZAPPA FRANK - Waka/Jawaka

One of the first things he tried was to write jazz fusion music scored for wider instrumentation than an average rock band. Waka/Jawaka was conceived in parallel to The Grand Wazoo, but with fewer players.

  • ZAPPA FRANK - Sleep Dirt

The material on this album was originally was intended to be part of a four-record set called Läther, prepared for release in 1977. The results were dumped on the market in 1978 and 1979, while Zappa moved on to his own record label.

  • ZAPPA FRANK - Grand Wazoo

While Zappa contributes some guitar solos and occasional vocals, the focus is more on his skills as a composer and arranger. Most of the five selections supposedly form a musical representation of a story told in the liner notes about two warring musical factions, but the bottom line is that, overall, the compositions here are more memorably melodic and consistently engaging than Waka/Jawaka.
