What can you use an iron-on transfer for?

There are lots of reasons you might want an iron-on transfer. They can be a fun (supervised) activity for kids and can also help children develop their artistic skills as well as show off their unique tastes and personalities. You can use them just to jazz up a plain old t-shirt with a diamante heart or stars, or with your own personalised text. Whatever you want, the sky is the limit. Here are a few examples of items that you might use iron-on transfers for:

  • Hen party outfits.
  • Dance or sport team uniforms.
  • Tote bags.
  • Fancy dress costumes.
What sort of iron-on transfers can you buy?

There are all sorts, from flat vinyl designs and lettering to diamante and other raised designs. Some vendors even let you choose the lettering you want along with the colour and font. If you cant find a design you like, then you can also buy plain iron-on transfer paper and make your own, using an ordinary printer.

How do you apply an iron-on transfer?

The transfer should come with instructions, so you should follow those closely for a great result. Place the item on a hard flat surface - dont use a padded ironing board. Set the iron to a wool temperature, and do not use steam. Peel off the backing paper, and place it on the garment in the desired location, and place a pressing cloth on top — you can use an ordinary tea towel for this. Then place the iron over the cloth and leave it in place for about a minute.

How should you care for an iron on transfer?

In order to maximise the life of the new design, there are a few things you should do when you wash it. Firstly, make sure that you follow the manufacturers washing instructions for the garment with the transfer. Turn the garment inside out, as this will minimise rubbing on the design. When you apply the transfer, leave it for at least 24 hours to cure before you wash it for the first time. Wash it at low temperatures, and leave it to dry naturally.
