JBL Pro Audio Speaker Drivers & Horns

JBL are an American company whose primary product range is speakers. There are two divisions of JBL, one for professional audio equipment and one for consumer. 

Speakers receive electrical audio signals and convert them into sound using a driver. They can be connected to a range of professional audio equipment such as effects units, mixers or Public Address (PA) systems

Speaker drivers

A speaker driver is the moving part of the speaker that converts electrical signals into sound waves. It vibrates at the correct frequency in order to create pressure waves of air that you hear as a sound wave.

Drivers are sometimes referred to by a name that denotes the range of frequencies they can produce. 

These are:

  • Tweeter - high range frequencies between 2,000 Hz - 20,000 HZ
  • Mid-Range - 250-2,000 Hz
  • Woofer -  60-250 Hz
  • Subwoofer - 20-200 Hz

There are two driver shapes available:

  • Cone
  • Dome 

Diaphragm materials include:

  • Paper
  • Plastic
  • Metal 

Horn loudspeakers

Horn speakers us an acoustic horn to increase the efficiency of the speaker driver. A compression driver converts the electrical signal into sound waves that radiate outwards of the horn. 

Horns are typically associated with tweeters or frequency ranges associated with the human voice.


  • Frequency response - the range of frequencies a speaker can produce.
  • Nominal power - the minimum amount of power required to drive the speaker.
  • RMS - which stands for Root Mean Square this is the power at which the speaker will be able to play continuously without sustaining damage.
  • Peak power - the maximum power that the subwoofer can handle for a short amount of time before damage occurs. 
  • Impedance - stated in ohms, this is typically 4, 8 or 16 ohms. This is a crucial value in determining you do not blow your speakers and will depend on your system setup. Research impedance further if you are unsure.
