A Guide to Collectable LEGO Minifigures

Everyone loves LEGO, and there are LEGO themes to suit anyone's taste. LEGO minifigures are little characters that are included with most LEGO sets, ever since their first appearance in the LEGO set 600 from 1978. You can find a vast number of LEGO minifigures spanning several decades by searching for collectible used LEGO minifigures at eBay.

Can you buy LEGO minifigures separately from the LEGO sets?

You can only buy licensed minifigures directly from LEGO, but you can buy valuable or cheap LEGO Star Wars minifigures and other similar themed minifigures new or used online at eBay whether they are licensed or not.

What are LEGO minifigure mystery grab bags?

LEGO began releasing blind bag sets of LEGO minifigures as standalone figures in 2010. Blind bags are small packages that contain one minifigure to put together, the identity of which is unknown. People buy the bags and try to collect the entire sets. The first sets were numbered in a series. They included figures like "Diner Waitress," "SkyDiver," "Tomahawk Warrior," "Roller Derby Girl," and "Plumber."

Soon, LEGO began also releasing themed minifigure sets from the London Olympics, "The LEGO Movie", "The Simpsons", "Harry Potter", "Ninjago", and other themes. These themed sets were interspersed with the numbered series sets. LEGO continues to release blind bag sets, like the Disney LEGO minifigures and Harry Potter LEGO minifigures. These blind bag LEGO figures are highly sought after on eBay as opened packages as it is hard to get complete sets without buying a lot of duplicates.

Collecting rare LEGO minifigures

Prices of collectible LEGO minifigures can fluctuate, but the relative value of certain rare LEGO minifigures remains constant. These are some of the rare LEGO figures in the UK that are highly collectable:

  • Black Suit Superman - Only 200 attendees of the 2013 San Diego Comic Con could win the Black Suit Superman minifigure. This Superman minifigure has black and silver colours as opposed to Superman's regular blue, yellow, and red colours.
  • Iron Man - This 2012 New York Toy Fair exclusive minifigure only had 125 figures given away at the toy fair. This Iron Man has a painted-on helmet, versus the removable helmets of other Iron Man minifigures.
  • Captain America - There were only 125 of these special minifigures given away at the 2012 New York Toy Fair. This minifigure has white eyes that other Captain America figures do not.
  • 14K gold C-3PO - In 2007, LEGO placed 10,000 chrome gold-plated C-3POs in random LEGO Star Wars sets to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Star Wars. These are considered rare Star Wars LEGO figures but not as rare as the five 14K gold C-3POs that LEGO awarded in a contest that same year.
  • 14K gold Boba Fett and silver Boba Fett - Some other rare LEGO Star Wars minifigures are the 14K gold Boba Fett and silver Boba Fet. Only two of each handed out as part of an exclusive Boba Fett LEGO set at the 2010 San Diego Comic Con.
