Grass Seed Buying Guide

Buying grass seed is harder than it seems because there are many different types of grass species and numerous seed packs. Knowing which one to pick will ensure that your yard thrives with healthy grass. Be sure to check eBay for a variety of affordable grass seed packets and mixtures.

How do you choose the right type of grass?

Several dozen types of grass species are available in commercial products, and it can be difficult to know which is right. While it does come down to preference in regards to colour and texture, there are some important growing and survival factors to consider.

  • Season: Some grass grows great during warmer seasons while others are right for cooler seasons. Cool-season grass tends to work in most environments, but warm-season grass performs better in warmer climates.
  • Drought resistance: Some grass needs a constant supply of water to live while others can adapt to droughts. This is often connected to their need for water. Most grass that is drought resistant also requires little water.
  • Traffic level: This refers to how well the grass holds up against foot traffic. Most grass offers moderate to rugged resistance against traffic, but some types are easily damaged by foot traffic.
What are the different types of grass seed mixtures?

Grass seed comes in different mixtures, and each one meets a specific need. The types of blends are:

  • Straight seed: This is just one type of grass without any fillers. Most straight seed packets have warm-season grass.
  • Blended seed mixture: This combines several types of the same species of grass for a consistent and hardy lawn.
  • Seed mixture: Youll receive several similar types of grass in the mix.
  • Lawn repair mix: These mixtures have seeds, mulch, and fertilizer for rapid growth. This is good for bare spots that quickly need grass.
What filler ingredients are included in grass seeds?

Almost every grass seed product has numerous filler ingredients. Some of these help with the growing process while others may disrupt the grass if they arent balanced. Nearly all seeds will have some weeds. Look for 0.5% or less of weeds. Inert matter is usually dirt and other filler materials that dont help or harm the grass. Look for about 2% or less of this.

There are also other miscellaneous crops that might be in the grass seed. Be sure that the other crops are no more than 2% so that they dont interfere with the grass.
