Beds and Mattresses

The type of beds and mattresses purchased will depend on a variety of factors. For most people, the key thing to consider when buying a new bed and mattress is the size.

Bed and mattress sizes

There are six standard sizes for beds and mattresses. These consist of: small single, single, small double, double, king size and super king size. There is also a toddler size for very young children to keep them safe while they sleep.

Think about the size of room in which the bed and mattress is going to live. How large are your doorways? Are they big enough to get a super king size mattress through?

It is always worth considering the height of the person who is going to sleep in the bed. For a comfortable night's sleep, it is worth choosing a bed that is 10 to 15cm longer than the person who will be sleeping in it.

Sizes available

Small singles are particularly beneficial for children's rooms, especially when they are stuck at that age between needing a children's bed and a bigger, more adult bed. Both small singles and single beds are also ideal for guest rooms.

Small doubles and doubles work well for couples or for just one person, particularly if they need a lot of sleeping space. Small doubles beds are typically 4 feet in width and are a popular choice for teenagers and adults alike.

King size and super king sized beds and mattresses are luxury beds, providing the most spacious sleeping area available. Super king size beds are the widest beds available to buy.

Types of beds

There are many different types of beds available including divan beds, which have fitted drawers, offering a convenient storage solution. Divan beds are available in wooden and metal frames to suit your bedroom's decor. They usually need to be assembled, so it is important to follow the instructions closely.

Bunk beds are a convenient option for people with limited space and are especially fun for children. Futons and sofa beds are also ideal for small rooms, particularly if the bed needs to stored away for extra space. Upholstered and adjustable beds are also available.

Types of mattresses

Mattresses are available in a variety of styles. Orthopaedic mattresses are specially designed to provide the maximum support for a person's back while they sleep. Another option is the memory foam mattress, which will mould itself to a person's shape as they sleep.

When considering what mattress to buy, firmness is a key factor. Most will be graded by firmness, from medium to soft. Choose the one that provides the support needed for a good night's sleep.
