Smartwatches

Smartwatches are electronic bracelets that can run advanced applications and act as a more traditional watch at the same time. Some more modern smartwatches are effectively wearable computers, with certain models offering all the features of a modern-day smartphone and can function independently of an additional device.

Features and Applications

Most smartwatches come with built-in backlit OLED or LCD displays that are usually touch responsive. A great example of this is the Samsung Gear series, which allows users to access dozens of unique health apps that rely on touch-screen capabilities.

Bluetooth is a crucial feature of smartwatches. It allows them to connect to an additional device such as a smartphone or tablet. This feature can allow smartwatches access to calendars, emails, messages and phone calls.

GPS tracking units are often built in. These allow the devices to track movement effectively, meaning they are an ideal device for measuring performance in endurance sports such as jogging and cycling. Newer watches can use the GPS capability to display maps and current coordinates.

The Apple Watch 2 and 3 can be submerged up to 50 metres underwater for up to 30 minutes, meaning it is an ideal device for those wish to track their swimming progress. It is crucial that you know how much water your device can be submerged in, and for how long, before going swimming whilst wearing it.

Customisation Options

Before buying your device, ensure that you know how much it can be customised. Check out the different straps that can be bought for each device and how easy they are to switch over. Some smartwatch creators, such as Apple, have collaborated with high fashion brands, like Hermes, to create stylish and unique straps. These are more expensive than most normal straps but are a real fashion statement.
