Supermoto Motorcycles and Scooters Put the Edge on Dirt-Bike Racing

Supermoto is a style of motorcycle racing that is a combination of street and dirt-bike racing that has its own events. Supermoto bikes are light and nimble and are designed for all-terrain riding. This rugged sport has been around for decades, and you can find an inexpensive, used supermoto on eBay.

Engine types on supermoto bikes

Supermoto bikes are designed for dirt racing at lower speeds than some other types of motorcycle racing. Accordingly, the engines are meant to deliver a more controlled power. Supermoto bike engines can range from a 450cc engine all the way to an engine of 980cc or more. An eight-valve, 937cc, fuel-injected l-twin engine that offers 113 HP and 72.2 pound-feet of torque is an example of a larger engine. These engines are typically single-cylinder, four-stroke engines.

What is the difference between supermoto and motocross bikes?

Motocross bikes are designed specifically for motocross racing, which takes place on dirt tracks. They are fast and light with a hard suspension. Their highest gear is usually the fourth gear. Supermoto bikes are designed for races that combine three types of tracks: a flat track course, a motocross course, and a road course. The biggest differences between these two types of bikes are the 17-inch rims that have sports tyres with precut slicks and the oversized front-rotor braking.

What races can you ride supermoto bikes in?

Because of the specialised differences that supermoto bikes have, like bigger sport tyres and more powerful braking, these bikes are meant for racing on specialised supermoto tracks. You can race your supermoto bike in any supermoto race and also in motocross races if allowable. Supermoto races are usually not restricted for engine sizes, but motocross races are set to certain engine types, like races for 150, 250, and 450 classes.

Are supermoto bikes modified racing bikes?

You can find supermoto bikes that are produced directly from the manufacturer as such, like new and preowned Yamaha supermotos, or you can also find supermoto bikes that have been modified from other types of dirt bikes. These modified bikes are often fan favourites and have special features.
