Enhance Your TV Viewing Experience with Surround Sound Speakers

Surround sound speakers can help create a truly immersive viewing experience, so you can enjoy cinema-quality sound in your own home. On eBay, you can find a vast selection of both new and used surround sound systems at prices to suit a wide range of budgets.

How does a surround sound system work?

A surround sound system works by utilising a number of speakers which are placed in different areas of a room. By splitting audio into different channels and sending different sound information to each speaker, they create an effect that makes a viewer feel as if they are right in the middle of the action. The most prominent sounds are sent to speakers which are located in front of the viewer, and other sounds are produced by speakers placed either behind or to the side of a viewer. For example, if there is an explosion in a scene, the sound may come from a speaker that's placed behind the user. The whole system works together to give the impression that sounds are moving and coming from different areas in your room.

What types of surround sound speakers are available?

There are a range of different surround sound speakers available, including:

  • Wired surround sound speakers: Connect devices with wires and cables.
  • Wireless surround sound speakers: Featuring built-in wi-fi or Bluetooth.
  • Dipole and Bipole surround speakers: Radiate sounds from two sides on a single speaker.
  • Bookshelf speakers: For standing on shelves or stands.
  • Ceiling or wall-mounted speakers: For an unobtrusive look.
Where should surround sound speakers be placed?

With a standard surround sound system, the centre speaker should be placed directly in front of the viewer, usually above or below the television. A subwoofer speaker is placed at the front of the room as well as left and right-side speakers. Left and right surround sound speakers are then positioned just behind the viewer. Some surround sound systems also include two rear surround sound speakers. These are designed to be placed directly behind a viewer, usually on the back wall.

What is the difference between a 5:1 and 7:1 surround sound?

Although both systems work the same way, a 5:1 surround sound system has six sound channels and speakers, whereas a 7:1 system includes eight speakers.
