A game of tactics and shrewd decision making, The Settlers of Catan is a thoroughly enjoyable game for 3-4 players. Player extensions for 5-6 players are also available. In addition to the base game, there are other Catan game expansions, standalone variants, spin offs, card game versions and travel versions, including a dice game. There is certainly plenty of choice when it comes to this particular board game .

The base game and base expansion games

As well as the original Catan base game, there are several base game expansion sets that can be added to it including Seafarers, Cities and Knights, Traders and Barbarians and Explorers and Pirates. These can also be combined with player extensions if required.

Spin offs and travel versions

There are alternative versions of the original base game to consider too. These include spin offs such as Settlers of America and Merchants of Europe. There are also those with simplified rules for children such as Catan Junior and The Kids of Catan.

For those who require a Catan game that is more suitable for travel, there is a variety of options. They include, the appropriately named, Catan traveller which is a smaller version of the standard game, along with a card game known as The Struggle for Catan, as well as a neat little standard edition dice game .

Standalone editions and other versions

There are even some exciting standalone alternatives to the original base game, which feature different themes and designs, whilst having similar game rules to the original. These include Ancient Egypt, Catan Family Edition, Star Trek Catan and Catan Geographies.

Finally, there is a card game more expansive than the one more suited for travelling, which is called The Rivals for Catan. There are expansions available for this game too including Age of Darkness and Age of Enlightenment.
