Women's Cardigans

Women's cardigans are a type of knitwear that have an open front that you can button up or leave open. The cardigan is modelled after the knitted wool waistcoat that British officers wore during the Crimean War, but are now a must-have for women all year round.

Whether it's your favourite winter cardigan for wrapping up while it's cold or your thin cardigan for a light summer layer, the cardigan has been a woman's staple for over a hundred years.

Women's cardigans are practical and are very versatile pieces of everyday knitwear, cheap to make and often cheaper to buy. Very few come with a brand name attached, as this may detract from the traditional appeal.

Different lengths

Knitwear is constantly evolving as items of fashionable clothing, for instance some cardigans now have hoods. Cardigans can also come in different lengths to accommodate for different styles, for example geometric and patterned designs.

Sometimes known as maxi or longline cardigans, long length cardigans stretch down past the waist and hips and towards the knee for a very current and stylish look. This type of cardigan is versatile and both formal and casual cardigans are available in this style.

Hip length cardigans stop on the hips, which accentuates them. They are very stylish and popular with bigger women.

Waist length cardigans extend to the waist and can be flattering on an hourglass figure.

Different materials

Lots of different materials are used to make women's cardigans and finding the right material for you is very important. Some of the popular materials used include:

Wool cardigans are made out of premium wool which makes this type of cardigan perfect for cold weather and ideal for wearing underneath coats.

Cotton cardigans are better for the summer months or for professionals such as teachers who need a thin layer to refine their look.
