Staying Warm in Winter: Women’s Fleece Coats and Jackets

Fleece is a synthetic fabric that is celebrated for its warmth and cosiness. The term is derived from the name for the woolly coats of sheep, goats, and related animals. The soft, warm, breathable nature of synthetic fleece makes it a good choice for outside garments in colder climates.

What kinds of outdoor garments are made from fleece?

Many types of cold-weather garments for women incorporate fleece elements:

  • Fleece coats
  • Ladies' long fleece jackets
  • Fleece button jackets
  • Fleece-lined women's coats
What types of fleece are available?

Different types of fleece have different thermal and water-repellent properties. Here are a few examples:

  • Cotton or cotton-blended fleece: Cotton fleeces typically found in sweatshirts or other garments are worn when temperatures may be on the chilly side but are not freezing. They have a smooth outer surface and a soft, plushy underside.
  • Polyester fleece: Polyester fleeces are used in camping clothing. They are good at repelling moisture.
  • Lycra Spandex fleece: Lycra fleece is stretchy and clings to the contours of your body.
  • Microfleece: Microfleece is a double-sided fleece that is extremely lightweight. The inner portion of the fabric absorbs sweat, which then evaporates through the outer portion of the fabric.
  • Polar fleece: Like microfleece, polar fleece is double-sided, but this fabric is thicker and warmer than microfleece. It is used extensively in clothing and gear designed for extremely cold climates.
How does fleece work to keep you warm?

The way synthetic fleeces are woven ends up producing a fabric that has many small air pockets. These air pockets act like insulation, trapping arm air on the inside of the fleece and keeping cold air on the outside of the fleece. This is how fleece coats and jackets are able to keep you warm even in extremely cold temperatures.

Newer fleece fabrics incorporate moisture-wicking technology so that if their warmth causes you to sweat, that moisture has a way to escape. This is what’s meant when a fleece is described as breathable. As the sweat moisture escapes, you’ll cool down. The result is that your body will stay at a comfortable temperature that is neither too hot nor too cold.

What are things to consider when buying coats and jackets?

The type of fleece you choose will depend upon the outside activity you want to participate in. If you are intending to wear your fleece-lined women’s coat as an overcoat, breathability may not be important to you. If you are intending to wear your fleece coat for rugged activities, such as skiing or hiking in the winter, then you will probably want to go for a lighter weight fleece.
