Women's Fur Coats and Jackets
Fur was an essential byproduct of the animals which we killed for food. Rudimentary clothing made from animal hides and fur would have a functional purpose, offering its wearer warmth and protection. As we have evolved so has our demand for fur. The post war prosperity of the 1950s saw fur garments rise in popularity. However, the ethics of fur for fashion became a contentious issue from the 1960s onwards as we faced the real threat of extinction of certain animals.
Although real fur is still seen on the market today, mainly through authentic vintage pieces and on some high end designer catwalks, its popularity has understandably waned. Fast forward to the modern day and the most popular choices for women's fur coats and jackets are now available in faux fur. This clever imitator, also called fun fur, is made of synthetic fibres and is designed to resemble the texture and look of the real thing. First invented over a century ago, it was initially made out of pile fabric, a technique of looping yarn that designers used in a similar way as they would when crafting both corduroy and velvet.
A women's fur parka is one of the most versatile winter coats you could ever purchase. A parka by definition is a hip-length cold-weather coat, usually stuffed with down or a very warm synthetic fibre to insulate the wearer. These coats will usually have quilted linings and faux fur trims and sometimes fur-lining throughout for added luxury. Its versatile design will contend with most scenarios from wet winter walks to chilly winter shopping days keeping you warm and dry throughout.
Women's fur gilets are great when layered with a thin jumper underneath. Mostly made from faux fur, women's fur gilets are a light sleeveless jacket or 'tank', sometimes featuring side pockets which are designed to be zipped up. Gilets are ideal for those warmer autumn or winter days when you may not want the bulk of a conventional jacket or coat, but need some extra warmth.
Women's fur capes and ponchos offer another quirky layering option, lending a sleek and sophisticated look to both evening and daywear. Modern day capes are typically hip length, with a fur trim. They fasten around the collar and sometimes have a hood.
A poncho is made from a rectangle of material rather than a circle - as with a cape - with a hole cut to pull over your head. Often a fur poncho will have detail such as faux fur trims, pom-poms or tassels.
