About Barbie Dream House
A global icon toy and major collectable today, Barbie was a groundbreaking idea when the stylish and fashionable doll was launched in 1959. The idea for a new kind of doll came to businesswoman Ruth Handler in the mid Fifties. She had seen her daughter playing with paper dolls and dressing them in paper clothes which kept becoming detached. At the time dolls were all modelled on infants, so Ruth saw a gap in the market for a three dimensional doll based on a grown woman which little girls could dress up in the latest fashions.
Produced by her husband?s company Mattel, Ruth launched the doll, which she named Barbie after her daughter, at the 1959 American International Toy Fair in New York. Marketed as a ?teenage fashion model?, Barbie was not an immediate huge success but sold steadily, managing around 350,000 in the first year. Television advertising gave the needed impetus and the doll took off and has continued to sell well ever since, seeing off various competitors along the way. Barbie was joined by her boyfriend Ken in 1961, and a whole host of friends, clothes and accessories have been introduced along the way, one of the best loved being Barbie?s Dream House.
Barbie?s Dream House is a doll?s house just for Barbie and her friends, and can be filled with a whole range of delightful furniture and decorative items, with sounds and lights adding to the role playing fun for the true Barbie enthusiast.
